This thesis first presents a detailed study of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Cathode Strip Chamber track stubs used to build muon tracks in the first layer of filtering, done in hardware, of the data. We study the spatial and angular resolutions of the track stubs with respect to the reconstructed hits using the full granularity data. We then move to a general description of a new technology, Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM), which is to be used in a near-future upgrade to the system. The characterization and calibration of the front-end electronics of the GEMs is discussed in detail. It is demonstrated that the noise of the electronics is sufficiently low to allow high efficiency operation of the technology with the first prototype GEM detector for the new subsystem. We then discuss the phenomenology of sphaleron-induced transition in proton-proton collisions. A new Monte Carlo generator is built to study this phenomenology in detail. We then perform a search analysis of the $35.9~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the CMS detector in 2016. We set the first experimental upper limit on sphaleron production in proton-proton collisions.

This thesis presents a search for narrow resonances in the dimuon invariant mass spectrum using data obtained from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. We describe the analysis and results of the data collected in 2018, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 63.1 fb$^{-1}$. We also present results of the combination of the 2016, 2017, and 2018 data sets, as well as the results of the combination with the dielectron analysis, which correspond to a total integrated luminosity of up to 140 fb$^{-1}$. The results are interpreted in terms of the upper limit on the ratio of the cross section of a new resonance to that of the $Z$ boson. We also compute the corresponding lower limits on the masses of various benchmark resonances. No evidence for beyond the standard model physics is observed in the 2018 data set, or in any of the combined data sets. Relevant for the high masses where we perform our search, we also discuss the reconstruction and performance of high momentum muons in CMS. In the appendix, we present a study of neutron-induced background hits in CMS endcap muon chambers.

The startup of the Large Hadron Collider will allow scientists to probe energy scales that existed picoseconds after the Big Bang. Monte Carlo samples of many Standard Model processes are produced to simulate the conditions in the Compact Muon Solenoid detector. Data analysis techniques are developed to measure the cross section of the W Z --> 3l(e, [mu]) decay channel. The results are [sgima]all = 723.4 ± 27.6(stat.) ± 144.7(syst.) fb for integrated luminosity 1 fb-1. Cross section measurements deduced by our data analysis techniques agree with the theoretical predictions, [sigma] pred. all = 708 ± 26.6 fb. The selection of W Z --> 3l events gave 43.5 ± 6.6 signal events with 6.4 ± 2.5 background events, enough to claim an observation at the level of five standard deviations. The understanding of this process will aid in the search for the Higgs boson, as well as in the search for new physics in the early stages of the operation of the detector.

ABSTRACT: Same-charge di-lepton events provide a very clean experimental signature for Supersymmetry (SUSY) search. This work studies the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment search potential for new physics with same-charge, isolated di-leptons accompanied by jets and large missing transverse energy. The results show that CMS sensitivity for new physics at 7 TeV with integrated luminosity 100 pb ... 1 will exceed current Tevatron limits. Muon detection for SUSY discovery in the forward direction is accomplished using cathode strip chambers (CSC). These detectors identify muons, provide a fast muon trigger, and give a precise measurement of the muon trajectory. There are 468 six-plane CSCs in the system. The efficiency of finding muon trigger primitives (muon track segments) was studied using 36 CMS CSCs and cosmic ray muons during the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC) exercise conducted by the CMS experiment in 2006. The efficiency of finding 2-dimensional trigger primitives within 6-layer chambers was found to be 99.93 ± 0.03%.

This thesis describes a precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] W + X production at the center of mass energy of s = 7 TeV of colliding protons. The data sample was collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb[-]1 . The measurement was performed in 11 bins of the muon pseudorapidity within [eta] 2.4 range and for two thresholds on its transverse momentum: pT 25 GeV and pT> 35 GeV. Precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry provides an important test for the Standard Model physics. Thanks to the large data sample, containing more than 20 million W [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] [MICRO SIGN][nu] events, statistical precision is greatly improved compared with the previous lepton charge asymmetry results at the LHC. Total absolute uncertainty on the charge asymmetry varies within 0.2% [-] 0.4% in different muon pseudorapidity bins. The result provides significant constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the Bjorken-x range from 0.001 to 0.1.

ABSTRACT: This dissertation describes the full details of 2 studies of Z0 bosons performed using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider of proton on proton collisions with center of mass energy of 7TeV. The first study searches for physics beyond the Standard Model by looking for an excess in production of Z0 bosons by examining the Z0pT spectrum. As no excess is found, limits on new physics models are presented as a function of mass and other free parameters. The second study focuses on a precision measurement of the Z0pT distribution, and is compared to theoretical calculations for the purposes of testing high order QCD calculations in addition to probing the predictions of various tunes of the underlying event.

This dissertation describes the search for large extra dimensions. Such extra dimensions could solve the hierarchy problem, one of the greatest puzzles in the field of particle physics. The hierarchy problem is the mystery of why gravity is significantly weaker than the electromagnetic, strong, and weak forces. A solution would unify the strength of gravity with the strength of the other forces. There are many possible tests for extra dimensions. Presented is the analysis of proton-proton collisions with final states in which a single photon recoils from an invisible particle. These data were collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector during the 2011 Large Hadron Collider run at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV. Backgrounds are estimated using data driven techniques for those due to W [arrow right] [ev] hadronic jets, and non-collision backgrounds such as beam remnants faking a photon, and anomalous energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The less significant backgrounds are estimated using Monte Carlo simulation, W[gamma], dijet, and jet + [gamma]. The irreducible Z([nu][nu])+ [gamma] background was estimated in Monte Carlo for the extra dimension search, but in later studies this component should be estimated by using a ratio of the measured Z[gamma] [arrow right] [mu][mu][gamma] cross section. The results are consistent with the predicted Standard Model cross section of Z bosons decaying to neutrino pairs. Subsequently, the worlds best limits are placed on the monophoton topology of large extra dimensions. The same analysis provides a measurement of the Z([nu][nu])+[gamma] cross section consistent with next to leading order predictions.
