Maka dalam banyak negara termasuk Malaysia, piawaian undang-undang digubalkan untuk mengawal efluen yang dilepaskan manakala badan air yang menerima efluen tersebut dikelaskan mengikut kegunaan tertentu. Berbagai-bagai model telah dibina supaya kesan efluen yang dilepaskan ke dalam badan air yang menerimanya dapat diramalkan dengan jelas, lalu menimbulkan pilihan tidnakan yang sesuai dan diperlukan untuk memelihara dan memuliharakan persekitaran akuatik serta ekosistemnya. Syarahan Umum ini akan membincangkan hasil pemodelan tercapai setakat ini dengan tumpuan difokuskan pada parameter kualiti asas seperti BOD (keperluan oksigen biokimia), DO (oksigen terlarut), SS (endapan terampai), dan FC (koliform najis), sementara kesan terhadap organisma akuatik akan tertumpu pada daphnia, kupang dan ikan.
