Each chapter covers a distinct neurotoxin or group of neurotoxins, with particular emphasis on the impact of the neurotoxin exposure on the developing brain and long-term cognitive and psychosocial outcomes. This is more complex than studying neurotoxins with adults because of the rapid development occurring in the child's brain. Further, children are more susceptible than adults to the effects of neurotoxins due to their developmental status. Many of the effects discussed in this volume occur in utero, thus setting the stage for an altered developmental trajectory.

Many of the pesticides applied to food crops in this country are present in foods and may pose risks to human health. Current regulations are intended to protect the health of the general population by controlling pesticide use. This book explores whether the present regulatory approaches adequately protect infants and children, who may differ from adults in susceptibility and in dietary exposures to pesticide residues. The committee focuses on four major areas: Susceptibility: Are children more susceptible or less susceptible than adults to the effects of dietary exposure to pesticides?
