To Henry Vi In the preface to the last volume, I stated that the issue for 1906 would deal with the Quarter Sessions Records for the reign of James I. But the time taken in the preliminary work of flattening, preparing, and binding several thousand documents has made it necessary to put off the production of this work for another year. Mr. Green kindly came to my assistance, and in its place has provided a fourth volume of the valuable Pedes Finium for the first half of the fifteenth century. This particular period has, for reasons given in the preface to Vol. XX, hitherto been somewhat neglected, and it is hoped that, in conjunction with the first volume of Mediaeval Wills, students of local history will be considerably aided in their researches. Judging from a wide, perhaps a superficial view, the tendency at this date was for land to become concentrated in fewer hands, owing to the ruin of the smaller proprietors consequent on the depreciation caused by the Pestilence in 1348-9. Another cause was the system of matrimonial alliances whereby the magnates sought to extend their power and influence in the state. The Quarter Sessions Records, so far as they have been examined, are even richer in many details of local and social history than might have been imagined.
