Book Description
In 1918 Gerhard and Alma Jacobson and nine-month-old Doris sailed for China. The Chinese landscape, both geographic and spiritual, proved to be a harsh and foreboding one. The marks of the destructive claws of the Dragon dogged the missionaries- haunted houses, civil conflict, demonic attacks, Japanese threats- and death. Then it was 1941. "Pearl Harbor Attacked," the headlines blazed. In Shanghai, Gerhard Jacobson continued to broadcast the gospel one day: "Ah-llo, Ah-llo," a man's voice yelled suddenly into the receiver. "We cut station off air. We come get you. You stay home!" Gerhard ascended the stairs to the room, his thoughts running wild. Visions of Japanese torture chambers filled his mind. What did the future hold? And what about the Pearl, the Church in China? Try as he might, the Dragon has failed to destroy it.

Christian Souls and Chinese Spirits
Author: Nicole Constable
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520338677
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
How do the people of a village that is both Chinese and Christian reconcile the contradictions between their religious and ethnic identities? This ethnographic study explores the construction and changing meanings of ethnic identity in Hong Kong. Established at the turn of the century by Hakka Christians who sought to escape hardships and discrimination in China, Shung Him Tong was constructed as an "ideal" Chinese and Christian village. The Hakka Christians translate "traditional" Chinese beliefs—such as ancestral worship and death rituals—that are incompatible with their Christian ideals into secular form, providing a crucial link with the past and with a Chinese identity. Despite accusations to the contrary, these villagers maintain that while they are Christian, they are still Chinese. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

China Between Empires
Author: Mark Edward Lewis
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674060350
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 351
Book Description
After the collapse of the Han dynasty in the third century CE, China divided along a north-south line. Mark Lewis traces the changes that both underlay and resulted from this split in a period that saw the geographic redefinition of China, more engagement with the outside world, significant changes to family life, developments in the literary and social arenas, and the introduction of new religions. The Yangzi River valley arose as the rice-producing center of the country. Literature moved beyond the court and capital to depict local culture, and newly emerging social spaces included the garden, temple, salon, and country villa. The growth of self-defined genteel families expanded the notion of the elite, moving it away from the traditional great Han families identified mostly by material wealth. Trailing the rebel movements that toppled the Han, the new faiths of Daoism and Buddhism altered every aspect of life, including the state, kinship structures, and the economy. By the time China was reunited by the Sui dynasty in 589 ce, the elite had been drawn into the state order, and imperial power had assumed a more transcendent nature. The Chinese were incorporated into a new world system in which they exchanged goods and ideas with states that shared a common Buddhist religion. The centuries between the Han and the Tang thus had a profound and permanent impact on the Chinese world.
