Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Town of Pawtucket In writing the following sketch I have tried to fulfill the wishes of both our National and State legislators. I suppose that the desire of Congress in recommending the writing of local histories on this Centennial year, was to secure for preservation an outline of the experiences of the various towns and cities in the work of planting and forming their little municipalities, and to show what growth they have attained. I presume that the special desire of the General Assembly of our State was to embody, in addition to the information named, an account of the industrial affairs of the various towns in our Commonwealth. To learn what branches of manufacture have been established among us, what inventions have been perfected, and what development productive industry has attained, is one result they had in view. I have therefore prepared a sketch. The time allotted me was too short to undertake anything more. To read the records of two or three towns for centuries, to ransack the archives of our State and of the shire town of Bristol county, to examine land titles and old manuscripts, would be pleasant for a man of an antiquarian taste, but would demand months of toil. Were a voluminous history of the town desired, however, all this and more would be demanded. But as I do not suppose that this was what our legislators desired, I have proposed to myself a less ambitious aim. Without undertaking much original research, I have gleaned from books and papers the more interesting facts pertaining to the town, and condensed and arranged them in a convenient form. Pawtucket
Author: Elizabeth J. Johnson
Publisher: Arcadia Library Editions
ISBN: 9781531608675
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
Pawtucket is a thriving and proud community with a rich history that spans over one hundred years. For decades, the Pawtucket Public Library and the Spaulding House Research Library have built up two remarkable archives chronicling the vivid history of Pawtucket from the 1820s to the 1990s. Now, these institutions have published over two hundred of the most fascinating images from their archives, bringing to life over one hundred and seventy years of Pawtucket's history--the people, places, landmarks, and events that have shaped this vibrant city. Accompanied by the authors' lively and authoritative text, these images invite us to journey back into the past and meet legendary Pawtucket characters such as Peter Palagi, aviator Jack McGee, and Fanny the elephant; to experience the bustle of Main Street or Broad Street in the 1870s and 1920s; and to rediscover landmarks such as the Music Hall building and Shartenberg's department store. As we meander through these pages, we see how much has been lost and yet how a sense of community has endured across the decades. This compelling visual history is a valuable contribution to the movement to preserve Pawtucket's heritage. It will be a source of education and fascination for young and old, resident and visitor alike.
