This book demonstrates the similarities within differences between Paul Tillich's (1886-1965) and Chu Hsi's (1130-1200) concepts of human condition. Tillich and Chu, one of the leading Christian theologians of the twentieth century and the greatest Sung Neo-Confucian philosopher respectively, were both profound students of human nature. By developing three vague comparative theological categories - unity, activity, and reunification - this book suggests that, although these two great thinkers came from two radically different religious traditions and cultures, Tillich and Chu articulated similar views of the unity of human reality and the problem of human existence. Furthermore, they proposed remarkably parallel strategies to resolve the tensions of finite human existence in searching for a reunification of human nature with its root in divine reality. Although these three comparative categories are generated from the fertile matrix of Tillich's thought they are designed to deal with a problem and its resolution common to Chu's thought as well.

In this book, both Tillich's nothingness and that of Barth are investigated, especially in their doctrines of God, Christologies, anthropologies, and understandings of the problem of evil, which will lead to a better understanding of their existential analyses of being and non-being and their implications with their Trinitarian God. To accomplish this task, a comparative study is engaged by examining the understanding of nothingness of theologians Paul Tillich and Karl Barth. The differences and similarities in their understanding of nothingness will be examined. This study is formulated to show how Tillich's nothingness is different from that of Barth. Tillich's understanding is philosophical-theological and it goes beyond that of traditional metaphysics. That is, Tillich's theology differs from the metaphysics of Hegel and Schelling that are ideal and abstract. In this sense, the objective of this study is to demonstrate that Tillich's philosophical theology can serve as a source of mediation between philosophy and theology. At the same time, this study will show that Barth's nothingness, as an evangelical-biblical understanding, is very significant in defending Christian faith. That is, this study will lead us to know that Barth's theology of nothingness safeguards Christian faith from being trivialized and marginalized by liberal theology.

Cultural Blending in Korean Death Rites examines the cultural encounter of Confucianism and Christianity with particular reference to death rites in Korea. As its overarching interpretive framework, this book employs the idea of the 'total social phenomenon', a concept first introduced by the French anthropologist Marcel Mauss (1872-1950). From the perspective of the total social phenomenon, this book utilizes a combination of theological, historical, sociological and anthropological approaches, and explores Korean death rites by classifying them into three categories: ritual before death (Bible copying), ritual at death (funerary rites),and ritual after death (ancestral ritual). It focuses on Christian practices as they epitomize the complex interplay of Confucianism and Christianity. By drawing on a total social phenomenon approach to the empirical case of Korean death rites, Chang-Won Park contributes to the advancement of theory and method in religious studies.
