Pathobiology of Cell Membranes, Volume II, is the second in a multivolume treatise on pathobiological aspects of cell membranes that aims to give the reader an overview of developments concerning the role of altered cell membranes in various pathological processes. This volume includes not only information on pathobiological aspects of cell membranes as studied at the molecular and subcellular level but also important new advances in the role of membranes in human diseases such as multiple sclerosis, shock lung, muscle dystrophies, and hematological disorders. The book begins by discussing a very important and yet poorly known aspect of cellular metabolism; namely, the compartmentalization of intracellular cations such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium. This is followed by separate chapters on fundamentals of membrane conformational changes in the erythrocyte model; the structure and function of peroxisomes and their role in disease processes; the use of invertebrate models for studies of pathological reactions; and reactions of lysosomes to cellular injury. Subsequent chapters deal with the pathology of skeletal muscle membranes; the shock lung syndrome; cellular mechanisms involved in jaundice and cholestasis; and pathology of the endothelium.

The present volume contains the edited transcript of a Totts Gap Colloquium held May 19-21, 1980 sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The aim of the colloquium was to bring into focus data relating to cell membranes that might contribute to understanding the pathogenic mechanism of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. A major impediment to progress in understanding the patho genesis of muscular dystrophy has been the failure, so far, to identify the basic genetic defect. Pending the identification of the genetic lesion in Duchenne dystrophy and, in view of scattered but persistent indications of a basic membrane disturbance, it seemed worthwhile to explore in open dialogue the current state of knowledge of membrane morphology and chemistry with an eye to possible leads for further investigation. The participants, drawn from a variety of interested disciplines, attempted to synthesize and reconcile their findings and to identify crucial areas of ignorance in need of exploration. For the most part they avoided specialized jargon and spoke in a language that could be understood by the rest of the group. Apart from providing a review of widely varying approaches to the study of the composition and behavior of cell membranes, the discussions brought together current think~g on strategies and approaches to the study of the pathogenesis of muscular dystrophy. Already the personal contacts made at the colloquium have led to new inter-institutional collabora tive investigations.

The physiology and pathology of membrane (contact or surface) digestion of the three main components of the food of animals and man is a rapidly developing field, and there is little doubt that newer ob servations will become available as time progresses. As the dis coverer of the phenomenon of membrane digestion, Professor Ugolev is well aware of the relative infancy of this subject, and in presenting the book at this time his primary purpose was to acquaint the reader with the experimental basis for the observed phenomenon and to stimulate interest in the further work required for the elucidation of details and for proper orientation. Translations as means of communication of ideas and experimental facts are of obvious importance and they require no apologies or explanations, particularly to those who are engaged in scientific endeavors. In making this book available to those who find the Russian language an insurmountable barrier, our main efforts were directed toward preserving the author's meaning, spirit, and intent as accurately as possible. It is hoped that this objective has been attained, and that the minor unintentional errors will be forgiven by the reader and by the author. The translator wishes to express to Professor Ugolev, whom he met in Leningrad in 1965, his appreciation for the trust in the ability of the translator to make Professor Ugolev's labor oflove, the present book, available in the English language.
