Book Description
Excerpt from Pastime Stories It used to be the custom for a writer on coming before the public to address a word to the "gentle reader" a custom which had this double advantage: that the author had his "word," and the reader, on his side, was not obliged to hear it. I wish now to avail myself of this old custom, and my gentle readers, if such there shall be, may take advantage of their privilege also. I will simply say that no one will be as sensible of the demerits of these stories as I am myself. So, my "gentle reader," we agree on that point at least. If you ask me why, then, I wrote them, I will say truthfully, because I was asked and chose to do so. Then, why did I publish them? Because I found a publisher. There are some good stories in the lot, old stories which have survived for generations - one, I am satisfied, for at least a century - and if they do not read well, it is because I have marred them in the telling. This is as much my misfortune as yours; do not complain, when I have tried to entertain you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Pastime Papers Mind, like muscle, cannot be overworked with im punity: both alike require relaxation and rest, and rest means recuperation. But tue mind diseased can not be ministered unto so easily as the muscle; and the nervous system is, for the most part, the man. For a jaded and overtaxed brain, recreation is the specific; and a little mirth and merriment may prove an excellent alterative. Book Description
Excerpt from Dancing as an Art and Pastime The purpose and plan of the present volume are set forth in the introductory chapter 5 but it seems only right that I Should express my thanks to those pupils who have been 'kind enough to aid me in illustrating the various attitudes that may or may not properly be assumed in dancing. If the positions described as good appear in some cases to fall short of the ideal of perfection, it Should be remembered by those disposed to be hypercritical, that there is a great difference between assuming a difficult attitude momentarily in dancing, and remaining in one without movement, sufficiently long _for even a rapid photograph to be taken. It was found that in this case a really instantaneous process would be impracticable, and many good negatives of groups were spoilt through a Slight movement on the part of one of the subjects. Beyond this, the work of reproduction necessarily involves a Slight loss of detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Collecting as a Pastime The rostrum shook under the thud of the fist of the reformed prizefighter, and the hall reverberated with his stentorian exclamation. Ah-h-h-h, my friends what will the drunkard do for drink? Allow me ]ll. To whisper, What won't the collector do for curios P 'it is generally understood that there IS honesty among thieves. This may be so - not being a member of that fraternity I cannot vouch for its accuracy. That this desirable attribute prevails amongst the majority of antique dealers and collectors is to my mind open to question. You know' you cannot do yourself justice unless you know more than the other fellow, while he in his turn, if you are a stranger, treats you with suspicion, and so you both play Brer Rabbit. Book Description
Excerpt from A Pastime: A Little Book of Verse Thy poems, thy own bandmark, I love well, Delicate fair flowers blooming in the waste, Not dashes of a gay abandonment, But glimpses of a spirit that knows not pain. Towards that spirit thy patient heart was set. "Whither art thou gone?" thou askedst the brief bloom Of the cereus fading glory, and the asking Tells me that thou knowest things unseen. C. H. H.
