Book Description
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Veterinary Departments have enabled an environment suitable to set an international benchmark on a project concept to enhance the welfare of racehorses, based on research using extensive and detailed data collection within an integrated framework. Retrospective analysis of data collected over the past several years has been made available. The approach outlined in this book has two broad objectives. The first is to investigate outcomes of interest using data which has already been collected. Outcomes of interest are likely to include (though not be limited to), variables that influence injury, retirement or performance. The second broad objective is to extend the approach to a more general assessment of the usefulness of different data types and different variables, and the assessment of data collection, collation, analysis and reporting methodology, as well as the development of intervention strategy. This book concludes with a philosophical view point on the veterinary management of thoroughbred racing injuries in which a “think-out-of-the-box” concept in assessing the risk of racehorse injuries is discussed. One outcome of this is an integrated technology approach for tracking horse performance, recently developed by Cambridge Design UK. The integrated technology (flight deck recorder concept) for monitoring trackwork and race performance of racehorses can allow a standardised review of detailed training data and biometric readings from direct measurements of individual horse, to assess the progress of performance and the effect of track conditions. The development of integrated performance tracking technology is mission critical for the worldwide racing industry to optimize horse welfare, safety and racing performance, as well as to enhance the integrity of racing.

Critical Needs for Research in Veterinary Science
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309164982
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 238
Book Description
Research in veterinary science is critical for the health and well-being of animals, including humans. Food safety, emerging infectious diseases, the development of new therapies, and the possibility of bioterrorism are examples of issues addressed by veterinary science that have an impact on both human and animal health. However, there is a lack of scientists engaged in veterinary research. Too few veterinarians pursue research careers, and there is a shortage of facilities and funding for conducting research. This report identifies questions and issues that veterinary research can help to address, and discusses the scientific expertise and infrastructure needed to meet the most critical research needs. The report finds that there is an urgent need to provide adequate resources for investigators, training programs, and facilities involved in veterinary research.

Survival: One Health, One Planet, One Future
Author: George R. Lueddeke
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429814011
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
Planet Earth has been here for over 4.5 billion years but in just two human generations we have managed to place our only 'home' at great risk. Many lessons from history have not yet been learned and new lessons may prove equally, if not more, difficult to take on board as we head deeper into the twenty-first century. This book highlights two of our greatest social problems: changing the way we relate to the planet and to one another, and confronting how we use technology (dataism) for the benefit of both humankind and the planet. Covering a wide range of key topics, including environmental degradation, modern life, capitalism, robotics, financing of war (vs peace) and the pressing need to re-orient society towards a sustainable future, the book contends that lifelong learning for sustainability is key to our survival. The author argues that One Health - recognising the fundamental interconnections between people, animals, plants, the environment - needs to inform the UN-2030 Sustainable Development Goals and that working towards the adoption of a new mindset is essential. We need to replace our current view of limitless resources, exploitation, competition and conflict with one that respects the sanctity of life and strives towards well-being for all, shared prosperity and social stability. Clearly written, evidence based and transdisciplinary - and including contributions from the World Bank, InterAction Council, Chatham House, UNESCO, World Economic Forum, the Tripartite One Health collaboration (UN Food and Agriculture Organization, World Organisation for Animal Health and World Health Organization), One Health Commission and more - this book cuts across sociopolitical, economic and environmental lines. It will be of great interest to practitioners, academics, policy-makers, students, nongovernment agencies and the public at large in both developed and developing nations.

An Introduction to Veterinary Medicine Engineering
Author: Nadja Bressan
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031228057
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
Do cephalopods change color when under distress? Is the reptilian heart analogous to a diaphragm positive displacement pump? Are digital twins the answer for animal experimentation? This book explores the new field of veterinary engineering science and discusses how to better measure vital signs in exotic and companion animals. A vast opportunity exists for developing novel technologies that target reductions to the number of invasive procedures patients are subjected to. We examine improvements to animal care and enhancement of animal welfare while creating a more sustainable veterinary healthcare ecosystem. The authors address the challenges engineers face in designing healthcare equipment for animals and how the field of veterinary engineering contributes to traditional veterinary medicine. This book brings a novel field of engineering to train future veterinarians and engineers on design and application of technology to veterinary medicine. Serves as a learning resource for the training and education of veterinary students, veterinarians and engineers Demonstrates through experiments and case studies the merging point between engineering and veterinary medicine Discusses concepts and issues associated with engineering and veterinary medicine Illustrates veterinary challenges using an engineering-design approach Provides examples of veterinary applications with successful outcomes, incorporating step-by-step directions for engineers

Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309316472
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
By 2050 the world's population is projected to grow by one-third, reaching between 9 and 10 billion. With globalization and expected growth in global affluence, a substantial increase in per capita meat, dairy, and fish consumption is also anticipated. The demand for calories from animal products will nearly double, highlighting the critical importance of the world's animal agriculture system. Meeting the nutritional needs of this population and its demand for animal products will require a significant investment of resources as well as policy changes that are supportive of agricultural production. Ensuring sustainable agricultural growth will be essential to addressing this global challenge to food security. Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability identifies areas of research and development, technology, and resource needs for research in the field of animal agriculture, both nationally and internationally. This report assesses the global demand for products of animal origin in 2050 within the framework of ensuring global food security; evaluates how climate change and natural resource constraints may impact the ability to meet future global demand for animal products in sustainable production systems; and identifies factors that may impact the ability of the United States to meet demand for animal products, including the need for trained human capital, product safety and quality, and effective communication and adoption of new knowledge, information, and technologies. The agricultural sector worldwide faces numerous daunting challenges that will require innovations, new technologies, and new ways of approaching agriculture if the food, feed, and fiber needs of the global population are to be met. The recommendations of Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability will inform a new roadmap for animal science research to meet the challenges of sustainable animal production in the 21st century.
