Book Description
Excerpt from Parmly Method Teachers' Manual Aim. To teach a child to read is to impart to him the power to get thought from the printed page. Memory. All progress in learning to read must depend upon the memory. Memory depends on three elements, interest, strength of impression, and repe tition. The first two are the most important; there fore in teaching, by exciting 'and maintaining a child's interest, and by securing distinct, vivid first impres sions, we greatly reduce the number of repetitions necessary to fasten new knowledge in his memory. Book Description
Excerpt from Parmly Method Third Reader The teacher will not find it necessary to use many diacritical marks in the Third Reader. Diacritical marks are employed to assist in the pronunciation of difficult words only; they may be used with words which appear to the child to contain some element already acquired, and with words which are exceptions to the rules already given in the Teacher's Manual, pages 18 - 21, 23, 26, 27. Book Description
Excerpt from Teachers Manual of Primary Methods When, a few years ago, the Department of Education was established in the Catholic University, it was felt by those placed in charge of it that the most important work which it should undertake was a revision of primary text-books so as to render them both scientific and Catho lic, and a revision Of primary methods which would render our work fruitful in placing religion in the heart of the curriculum and in giving to it the preponderating influence which it should have in the developing minds and hearts of Catholic children. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual, Vol. 2: The Teacher's Method, With Copious Word Lists We now pass from general considerations to the Phone tic Method itself. It is assumed that the teacher is already familiar with the Manual, to which constant references will be given. It is now only necessary to give some guidance in the applica tion of the system to the particular work of teaching to read. The following is recommended as a general scheme, and will serve as a useful introduction to a series of detailed lessons, and notes based upon the Child's Key, and intended for use either in connection with it, or as an independent guide to blackboard lessons for young children. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching: A Manual for Normal Schools, Reading Circles, and the Teachers of Elementary, Intermediate, and Higher Schools The art of teaching should have its foundations in science; for then and only then will teaching cease to be mechanical obedience to "authority." Such obedience was the curse of the "old" education. "Tradition" and "prescription" determined the methods not only in oriental systems of education, but also in the later civilizations of Europe. The principle of authority has not wholly disappeared from modern schoolrooms. Rational methods of teaching, indeed, are the exception rather than the rule in the great mass of American teachers. The individual teacher must have part in the construction of the science in which his art is to have its foundations. Otherwise the "new" education will simply substitute one tyrant for another. In other words, obedience to principles of philosophy, though it be the best philosophy, is only slavery as long as the teacher who submits to such laws cannot justify these in his own consciousness. The great mass of teachers is not equal to the task of constructing the complex science of education independently. This task implies not only analytic knowledge of human nature in its manifold relations, but also the power of synthetic thought. The great body of teachers, therefore, need supervision in constructing their system of educational principles. It is hoped that the plan of the present treatise may supply at least a portion of the needed supervision.
