Book Description
These proceedings contain a selection of papers presented at the Third European Conference on Multigrid Methods which was held in Bonn on October 1-4, 1990. Following conferences in 1981 and 1985, a platform for the presentation of new Multigrid results was provided for a third time. Multigrid methods no longer have problems being accepted by numerical analysts and users of numerical methods; on the contrary, they have been further developed in such a successful way that they have penetrated a variety of new fields of application. The high number of 154 participants from 18 countries and 76 presented papers show the need to continue the series of the European Multigrid Conferences. The papers of this volume give a survey on the current Multigrid situation; in particular, they correspond to those fields where new developments can be observed. For example, se veral papers study the appropriate treatment of time dependent problems. Improvements can also be noticed in the Multigrid approach for semiconductor equations. The field of parallel Multigrid variants, having been started at the second European Multigrid Conference, is now at the centre of interest.

Book Description
This is an introductory book on supercomputer applications written by a researcher who is working on solving scientific and engineering application problems on parallel computers. The book is intended to quickly bring researchers and graduate students working on numerical solutions of partial differential equations with various applications into the area of parallel processing. The book starts from the basic concepts of parallel processing, like speedup, efficiency and different parallel architectures, then introduces the most frequently used algorithms for solving PDEs on parallel computers, with practical examples. Finally, it discusses more advanced topics, including different scalability metrics, parallel time stepping algorithms and new architectures and heterogeneous computing networks which have emerged in the last few years of high performance computing. Hundreds of references are also included in the book to direct interested readers to more detailed and in-depth discussions of specific topics.

Book Description
It was about 1985 when both of the authors started their work using multigrid methods for process simulation problems. This happened in dependent from each other, with a completely different background and different intentions in mind. At this time, some important monographs appeared or have been in preparation. There are the three "classical" ones, from our point of view: the so-called "1984 Guide" [12J by Brandt, the "Multi-Grid Methods and Applications" [49J by Hackbusch and the so-called "Fundamentals" [132J by Stiiben and Trottenberg. Stiiben and Trottenberg in [132J state a "delayed acceptance, resent ments" with respect to multigrid algorithms. They complain: "Nevertheless, even today's situation is still unsatisfactory in several respects. If this is true for the development of standard methods, it applies all the more to the area of really difficult, complex applications." In spite of all the above mentioned publications and without ignoring important theoretical and practical improvements of multigrid, this situa tion has not yet changed dramatically. This statement is made under the condition that a numerical principle like multigrid is "accepted", if there exist "professional" programs for research and production purposes. "Professional" in this context stands for "solving complex technical prob lems in an industrial environment by a large community of users". Such a use demands not only for fast solution methods but also requires a high robustness with respect to the physical parameters of the problem.

Book Description
This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fifth European Multigrid Conference, held in Stuttgart, October 1996. All contributions were carefully refereed. The conference was organized by the Institute for Computer Applications (ICA) of the University of Stuttgart, in cooperation with the GAMM Committee for Scientific Computing, SFB 359 and 404 and the research network WiR Ba-Wü. The list of topics contained lectures on Multigrid Methods: robustness, adaptivity, wavelets, parallelization, application in computational fluid dynamics, porous media flow, optimisation and computational mechanics. A considerable part of the talks focused on algebraic multigrid methods.

Book Description
This book contains the main results of the German project POPINDA. It surveys the state of the art of industrial aerodynamic design simulations on parallel systems. POPINDA is an acronym for Portable Parallelization of Industrial Aerodynamic Applications. This project started in late 1993. The research and development work invested in POPINDA corresponds to about 12 scientists working full-time for the three and a half years of the project. POPINDA was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF). The central goals of POPINDA were to unify and parallelize the block-structured aerodynamic flow codes of the German aircraft industry and to develop new algorithmic approaches to improve the efficiency and robustness of these programs. The philosophy behind these goals is that challenging and important numerical appli cations such as the prediction of the 3D viscous flow around full aircraft in aerodynamic design can only be carried out successfully if the benefits of modern fast numerical solvers and parallel high performance computers are combined. This combination is a "conditio sine qua non" if more complex applications such as aerodynamic design optimization or fluid structure interaction problems have to be solved. When being solved in a standard industrial aerodynamic design process, such more complex applications even require a substantial further reduction of computing times. Parallel and vector computers on the one side and innovative numerical algorithms such as multigrid on the other have enabled impressive improvements in scientific computing in the last 15 years.

Book Description
Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel applications. This volume comprises 67 revised contributions presented at the Sixth European PVM/MPI Users' Group Meeting, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, 26-29 September 1999. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This conference has been previously held in Liverpool, UK (1998) and Cracow, Poland (1997). The first three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the TU Munich, Germany (1996), ENS Lyon, France (1995), and University of Rome (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between those groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying some of those already existent to new practical fields.
