Book Description
Excerpt from Contributions to Abdominal Surgery Barnard's premature death is a loss to Surgery. From the commencement of his career on the Staff of the London Hospital, he was attracted to Abdominal Surgery, and his more important communications to various societies and to the medical papers dealt with this. His last work, on Subphrenic Abscess, published the year of his death, was universally recognized as a great advance on previous knowledge, and has done much to clarify our ideas on what is one of the most difficult subjects in this branch of Surgery; careful perusal of this work, putting into practice its teachings, will be the means of saving many lives. Barnard had been working for several years at the subject of Intestinal Obstruction, and had planned an exhaustive treatise. The first - fruits of his work were his articles on Gall-stone Obstruction in the Annals of Surgery, embodied in his later work on this subject, and his lectures on Intestinal Obstruction at the Medical Graduates' College and Polyclinic. The book was put on one side while he was engaged on his article for Allbutt and Rolleston's " System of Medicine." It is only necessary to glance at the work to see what a tremendous amount of labour it involved; it is a mine of information and of personal observation. A small committee, consisting of Mr. Hugh Barnard, Professor Arthur Keith, Dr. Cecil Wall, and myself, met on Harold Barnard's death to discuss the best form a memorial should take. Book Description
Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Abdominal Surgery and Other Subjects The volume comprises lectures on Abdominal Surgery, con taining the results of the author's vast experience in this depart ment; a paper on The Treatment of Gun-shot Wounds of the Small Intestines, based upon a series of experiments on dogs; it also contains short clinical lectures upon almost every subject in Surgery. From ten to twenty patients were present for treatment at each clinic, consequently only the important practical facts could be dwelt upon - the theoretical discussion being reserved for the three didactic lectures which the author delivered each week. In order to illustrate the amount of work which had to be per formed during one session, the stenographic report of one entire clinic has been added as an appendix. Most of the cases considered were referred to the clinic by alumni of the college. Their initials and addresses have been preserved for the purpose of identification. Book Description
Excerpt from Surgical Contributions From 1881-1916, Vol. 2: Abdominal Surgery It is, perhaps, hardly necessary to apologize for occasional repe tition. This could onlv have been avoided by elaborate editing, and would have taken away the simplicity of the book. When it is remem hcrcd that the papers were written for different societies and journals, with different circulations, repetition was bound to occur; moreover, repetition is an absolute necessitv if a truth is to be driven home. In this Vear. When we have the benefit of the Daylight Saving Act given to us, how many must feel humiliated to think that it required a European and the example of other nations to get this idea into the heads of men who even had a reputation for being clever. Well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from War Surgery of the Abdomen This Book contains the experiences in abdominal surgery of a sector of the battle line over a period of thirty months. It is founded on the practice of many surgeons, working under different conditions and in different hospitals. The personal equation and influence of locality have thus been largely eliminated. It is hoped, therefore, that the figures quoted may present a standard with which other surgeons can compare their results.
