The Asian Vigna
Author: Norihiko Tomooka
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401003149
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
The Asian beans and grams, the species of Vigna (subgenus Ceratotropis), include several legumes that are an essential component in the diets of a large proportion of Asia's population, and interest in these legumes is growing as ethnic cuisine spreads worldwide. However, this important group of legumes is little known compared to the closely related Phaseolus beans and soybean. That deficiency is addressed for the first time in this fully illustrated comprehensive conservation, genetics, taxonomic, and agricultural monograph on the genetic resources of the Asian Vigna. The book deals with the phylogeny of the group from the perspectives of morphological and molecular analyses, ex situ and in situ conservation, eco-geographical analyses, and research. In addition, morphological descriptions, keys, and eco-geographic details of each species in the group are provided. This genetic resources handbook and guide to the Asian Vigna will be a valuable reference for agriculturists, conservationists, taxonomists, other scientists, and students interested in the legumes and plant genetic resources.

Conservation of Genetic Resources
Author: Detlef Virchow
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642584500
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Over the past decade the importance of natural resources for sustainable agricultural development has been increasingly discussed at international forums and conferences. Aside from the sustainable management of soil, water, and air, it now seems to be accepted that the sustainable management of genetic resources is one of the four indispensable preconditions for a sustainable agriculture. The discussion on conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), however, has to reflect the costs of conservation as well. These have not yet been discussed intensively. The study analyzes the conservation costs of plant genetic resources; it also assesses the effectiveness of conservation and the efficiency of the different conservation instruments. It is based on extensive surveys in relevant countries. Following the detailed cost and impact analysis, the results show that the effectiveness of conservation strategies may be increased.

PCR Cloning Protocols
Author: Bruce Alan White
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781592595532
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 490
Book Description
Distinguished scientists and researchers present a comprehensive collection of current preparative PCR techniques that can be used in cloning and modifying DNA and cDNA. Topics include performing and optimizing PCR (including long PCR), cloning PCR products, cloning unknown neighboring DNA, and library construction and screening. Also covered are mutagenesis, recombination, and in vitro selection, differential and subtractive approaches to cDNA analysis and screening, and cloning members of gene families. The techniques bring to both new and established researchers the power to apply PCR-based methodology to the cloning and modification of DNA, either through innovative protocols or by fostering individual creativity to modify and customize the protocols to best fit their own needs.
