This is the first independent account of a unique institution, the Wallingford Farm Training Colony - later known simply as 'Turners Court' - which opened a century ago. Founded by a group of philanthropic non-conformists, the 'Colony' aimed to take unemployed young men off the streets, train them on the land and send them off to the 'Dominions'. During its 80 year history, Turners Court's clientele, training programme and lifestyle all changed radically. The author has used the institution's own records, together with the (mainly unpublished) accounts of former 'colonists' and staff members, and sets the history of the Colony in the context of 20th century legislation, economic and social change.

The ancestors of Timothy Hogan can be traced from Greene County, Tennessee before the Civil War to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, England where his ancestors were Lords and Ladies of ancient England and Wales. Many lines go back to the ancient leaders of Wales including Rhys aps Griffith and to the Merovingian Kings and Queens of Normandy, France. Timothy's Swedish line, which came to Iowa in the USA, came directly from Sweden where they can be traced back to the sea kings of Uppsala, Sweden in about 500 AD. Continuing back some of his European ancestors, they can be traced to Seleucus Nicator in ancient Syria, the father of Helen of Troy. It is easy to imagine that some of the members of the Hogan Family retained the ambition and traits of their ancient ancestors. Many of his forefathers in Colonial America were Freemasons and instrumental in forming the burgeoning American Nation. The rich history of the German rabbinate came to an abrupt halt with the November Pogrom of 1938. The need to leave Germany became clear and many rabbis made use of the visas they had been offered. Their resettlement in Britain was hampered by additional obstacles such as internment, deportation, enlistment in the Pioneer Corps. But rabbis still attempted to support their fellow refugees with spiritual and pastoral care. The refugee rabbis replanted the seed of the once proud German Judaism into British soil. New synagogues were founded and institutions of Jewish learning sprung up, like rabbinic training and the continuation of “Wissenschaft des Judentums.” The arrival of Leo Baeck professionalized these efforts and resulted in the foundation of the Leo Baeck College in London. Refugee rabbis now settled and obtained pulpits in the many newly founded synagogues. Their arrival in Britain was the catalyst for much change in British Judaism, an influence that can still be felt today.

This four-volume historical resource provides new opportunities for investigating the relationship between religion, literature and society in Britain and its imperial territories by making accessible a diverse selection of harder-to-find primary sources. These include religious fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, sermons, travel writing, religious ephemera, unpublished notebooks and pamphlet literature. Spanning the long nineteenth century (c.1789–1914), the resource departs from older models of ‘the Victorian crisis of faith’ in order to open up new ways of conceptualising religion. A key concern of the resource is to integrate non-Christian religions into our understanding and representations of religious life in this period. Each volume is framed around a different meaning of the term ‘religion’. Volume one on ‘Traditions’ offers an overview of the different religious traditions and denominations present in Britain in this period. Volume two on ‘Mission and Reform’ considers the social and political importance of religious faith and practice as expressed through foreign and domestic mission and philanthropic and political movements at home and abroad. Volume three turns to ‘Religious Feeling’ as an important and distinct category for understanding the ways in which religion is embodied and expressed in culture. Volume four on ‘Disbelief and New Beliefs’ explores the transformation of the religious landscape of Britain and its imperial territories during the nineteenth century as a result of key cultural and intellectual forces.
