Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Theoretical Chemistry The author has gladly availed himself of the opportunity, afforded by the demand for a third edition of his Outlines of Theoretical Chemistry, to subject the entire text to a thorough revision. This undertaking has involved the rewriting of large portions of the preceding edition, the introduction Of much new material based upon recent advances in the science Of physical chemistry, and such changes in the arrangement of the various chapters as the logical presentation of the subject demands. The criticisms and suggestions which have been offered by a number of teachers, who have used the former editions of the book with their classes, have proven most helpful in the arduous task of revision. Book Description
Excerpt from Lecture-Notes on Theoretical Chemistry The study of theoretical chemistry has not, in general, met with that recognition and appreciation which is warranted by the interest and importance attaching to this branch of chemical science. Seeking. For an explanation, it appears that to many this study presents considerable difficulty, on account of the num ber and variety of themes - frequently exhibiting no organic connection-to which the attention of the student is invited. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Theoretical Chemistry The author is fully convinced from his own experience as we.i as from that of his colleagues, that the complete mastery of the fundamental principles of the science is best attained through the solution of numerical examples. For this reason, typical problems have been appended to various chapters of the book. Numerous references to original papers have been given throughout, since the importance of literary research on the part of the student is conceded by all teachers to be of prime importance. While a brief account of radioactive phenomena might very properly be considered to lie within the scope of a general outline of theoretical chemistry, yet owing to the unparalleled growth of knowledge in this field during the last decade, the author has come to believe that a condensed statement of the main facts of radiochemistry would not. be of sufficient value to justify the effort involved in its preparation. In the original preparation of his lectures, and in their evolution into book form, the author has had frequent occasion to consult Nernst's "Theoretische Chemie," Ostwald's "Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Chemie," and Van't Hoff's "Vorlesungen ueber theoretische und physikalische Chemie." Among other books to which the author is especially indebted arc the following: - Le Blanc's "Lehrbuch der Elektrochemie," Daneel's "Elck-trochemie." Text books of Physical Chemistry edited by Sir William Ramsay, Bigelow's "Theoretical and Physical Chemistry." Jones' "Elements of Physical Chemistry," Reychler-Kuhn's "Physikalisch-chemische Theorieen," and Whetham's "Theory of Solution." In the preparation of the problems the author would record his indebtedness to Abegg and Sackur's "Physikalisch-chemische Rechenaufgaben," and to Morgan's "Elements of Physical Chemistry." It is a pleasure to acknowledge the valuable assistance rendered by Dr. Eleanor F. Bliss and Dr. Anna Jonas, who have read and revised the proof of the paragraphs treating of crystalline form. The index of titles and names has been prepared by the author's wife to whose untiring patience its completeness is due. Book Description
Excerpt from Molecules and the Molecular Theory of Matter Throughout this volume I have considered molecules in' their physical aspect. There are numerous excellent works that discuss the chemical aspect of the molecular theory satisfactorily, of which the following may be particularly recommended: Meyer's Modern Theories of Chemistry, Rem sen's Theoretical Chemistry, Ostwald's Outlines of General Chemistry, and Mendeleiefi's Principles of Chemistry. Book Description
Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry: With the Elements of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry In Part I is found a general introduction to chemistry and a logical division of the subject into its principal branches. In Part II is given such an outline of physical chemistry as is necessary to the full understanding and appreciation of the de scriptive portion of the work. In Part III theoretical chemistry is treated With more than the usual fullness. The student cannot too soon become acquainted With this branch of the subject nor study it too much. It contains the very heart of chemistry, and a knowledge of it is absolutely necessary to the intelligent study of the elements and their com pounds.
