Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Botany The following brief sketch of the history of botany makes no claim to originality save in the mode of presentation of the subject-matter. It comprises the substance of a course Of lectures given to students Of the University of Liverpool during their third year Of residence, and has for its object the discussion of the more important features in the advance of botanical knowledge from the earliest times down to, approximately, the present day. The ordinary university student, in the course of an already overcrowded curriculum, has only the minimum of time to devote to the study of the history of the science, and not always the knowledge or experience requisite to form a proper estimate of the relative values of the results achieved by the numberless investigators whose names appear on the pages of the larger text-books, still less to picture for himself in correct perspective, the evolution of the science as a whole. These lectures, it is hoped, may in some measure aid him in attaining these ends, so far as the history of botany is concerned. Much has been omitted that another writer might have included exigencies of time and space must serve as excuse for such omissions. Some aspects Of the subject have been expanded, not unduly it is hoped, that others might prefer to treat more briefly or to omit altogether. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Botany, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Outlines of the Natural History of Vegetables That period has not yet arrived. I have, however, the satisfaction of observing, that these sciences are making some, nay even great, advances among us; and I still flatter myself, that the directors of our principal American universities, or other seminaries of learning, but, in particular, the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania (in which all the branches OF ME dical science are taught much more exten sively than IN any other part OF the united state will see the propriety, and even necessity, of giving more substantial encouragement for the exten sion of Natural History among us. Excerpt from Outlines of Botany, Vol. 2: Including a General History of the Vegetable Kingdom, in Which Plants Are Arranged According to the System of Natural Affinities Elementary works are of necessity compilations in many parts. It is their lowly yet useful ofiice to glean on every side, and aided by all their fellow labourers in the fields of science, who fling the liberal handfuls from every shock, to form a common sheaf for the sustenance of those who are as yet too young to work, or too weak in knowledge to gather for themselves. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Botany: 1530 1860 The style of the narrative might have been freer, and greater space might have been allotted to reflections on the inner connection of the whole subject, if I had had before me better preliminary studies in the history Of botany; but as things are, I have found myself especially occupied in ascertaining questions of historical fact, in distinguish ing true merit from undeserved reputation, in searching out the first beginnings of fruitful thoughts and observing their development, and in more than one case in pro ducing lengthy refutations of wide-spread errors. These things could not be done within the allotted space without a certain dryness of style and manner, and I have Often been obliged to content myself with passing allusions where detailed explanation might have been desired. As regards the choice of topics, I have given promin ence to discoveries of facts only when they could be shown to have promoted the development of the science; on the other hand, I have made it my chief object to dis cover the first dawning of scientific ideas and to follow them as they developed into comprehensive theories, for in this lies, to my mind, the true history of a science. But the task of the historian of Botany, as thus conceived, is a very difficult one, for it is Only with great labour that he succeeds in picking the real thread of scientific thought out of an incredible chaos of empirical material. Book Description
Excerpt from Class-Book of Botany: Being Outlines of the Structure, Physiology and Classification of Plants; With a Flora of the United States and Canada From the multiplication of species and genera we have studiously refrained, believing that our books already contain more than Nature will warrant. In the case of any doubtful specimen, which might have served as the basis of a new species, or possibly genus, (had this been our aim), we have always inclined rather to the extension of the limits of some kindred group for its reception, having less apprehension of error in this direction than in the opposite, with all due regard for the permanence of true species. The same principle has compelled us to disallow the claims of many reputed species of the best authors. In the sequence of the Natural Orders, we have, in common with all recent American authors, mainly adopted the arrangement of De Can dolle, - nu arrangement seen, in part, in the Flora of the State of New York, ' by Dr. Torrey. It commences with those Orders supposed to be of the higher rank in organization, and proceeds gradually to the lower, regarding the completeness of the flower and the distinctness of its parts as the general criterion of rank.
