Book Description
Excerpt from New American History and Government Outlines History is the study of the life of a people. "History is the biography of a society." "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." "Through the ages one increasing purpose runs." "The present is the fruit of the past and the germs of the future." "History knows not if, and might have been is a form of words unwritten in her book of phrases." - Ridpath. Europe Before the Discovery of America Peoples supposed to have visited America before 1492: Chinese, Egyptians. Phoenicians and Greeks. Northmen, 1000. Events hindering further visits: Invasions of Goths, Vandals and Huns, 350 to 476. Establishment of new nations. Conquest among nations. Lack of geographical knowledge. Causes leading to a revival of interest in new lands: Commercial ambition. Religious zeal. The crusades. The renaissance. What ancient Europe sent to the East: Metals, wood, pitch, woolen cloth, linen, black lead, wine and glassware. What ancient Europe brought from the East: Silks, cotton cloth and other fine dry goods. Dye woods and drugs. Precious stones and ivory. Spices and perfumes. Cities which controlled trade with the East: Venice, by way of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian ocean. Genoa, by way of Bosporus and Black Sea, and then by caravan to the East. Antioch, by way of Euphrates valley and Persian gulf. What changed trade routes: In 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and refused to let the ships of other nations pass through the Bosporus. This closed Genoa's route, gave Venice a monopoly and made a new route desirable. New routes tried: Passage around Africa by Diaz, a Portuguese sailor, who succeeded in sailing around the south cape, which he named Cape of Storms, but the name was changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal. Columbus' plan: To sail west until he reached China or India. "The great canon of history is its continuity." Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of the Constitutional History of the United States This work is designed to be a beginning book for students, or general readers, who desire to learn some thing of the character and history of the Constitution of the United States. It is an elementary account of government in the United States. It gives a brief state ment of the main facts of our constitutional history but it does not profess to be a constitutional history in the full meaning of the term. For the general reader or for high-school use it prob ably covers sufficient ground. For the college student it attempts simply to point the way to extended study by a brief but connected review of the main facts, showing what is of chief importance for further study, and embracing those political documents which every student of our history must thoroughly understand. Book Description
Excerpt from The Constitutional History and Government of the United States IN this edition some of the chapters have been rewritten and the others have been carefully revised. The conditions and circumstances which favored the institution of self-government in the colonies have received more attention. Care has been taken, however, to limit the narrative portions of the work to the collocation of such facts as serve to show the course of our constitutional system in its beginnings, growth, and development. Many notes have been added, a considerable number of them illustrative of the objections and spirit of opposition which the practical development of the system has encountered. The la bors of the Supreme Court in giving a sensible and practicable construction to the Constitution are constant, and some account of the most important since the earlier edition has been added. Recent important events at home and. Abroad involving or pro mising to involve the scope of constitutional powers have received attention. Book Description
Excerpt from A General Outline of Civil Government: In the United States, the States, Counties, Townships, Cities, and Towns It is the aim of this little book to bring the subject of Civil Government within the reach of that large class of students who desire to complete their school-work in the shortest time possible. There are many good text-books on the subject which require from two to three terms to complete; but the press of other important studies is so great that it is better to have a treatise which may be completed in a single term with perhaps but two recitations a week. In making a book of this kind, the purpose has been to secure the greatest brevity with the least loss of the qualities of a good text-book. Much of the comment on different institutions is left to the teacher, who will know best how to economize time as the case of his class requires. The frequent mention of books for a further study of the subject will be of help to teachers. The object in teaching is to get the student to do, and do well, the work in hand. Book Description
Excerpt from Topical Outlines History and the Constitution United States: For the Use of Schools and Private Learners This little work will serve to indicate a complete course of instruction in the History and the Con stitution of the United States for topical recita tion, such as may be pursued in schools and by the private learner. It is believed that these subjects can be taught correctly only by means of outlines, pupils giving intelligent discussions of each topic in their own correct language. They have been used with great satisfaction in actual work in the class room, for which purpose they were originally pre pared and to avoid frequent rewriting both by the teacher and the pupils, they are presented in this form. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines General History History defined. History is the record of past events in the life of mankind. In detailing these events, however, it con cerns itself with their relation, and seeks to point out the connection of cause and effect that exists between them. A bare catalogue of unrelated facts, though true in themselves, would not make history in the modern sense. There must be some definite principle on which the selection of the facts is based. This principle is that a fact, in order to have bistori cal value, must help to explain what goes before or what comes after in the life of a people. Kinds of History. - It is clear that the past life of mankind may be regarded from different points of view. Thus, if the special purpose is to show how men have advanced in knowl edge from age to age, and what influences have quickened their minds or changed their modes of thought, the narrative is called Intellectual History. If the object is to point out the changes which have taken place in men's ideas of right and wrong, and to trace the development of moral standards, the work is termed a History of Morals. Political History deals with the external events in the life of a nation, showing its varying relations to other nations and to its own government. Constitutional History has to do with changes in the form and principles of government, and in the character and administra tion of law; Economic History, with the past conditions of a people in respect to the possession and acquisition of wealth. So the particular field to which the narrative is confined de termines how the history is to be classified. It is very difficult, however, to keep these departments distinct, as events which properly fall within the scope of one department have often a very important bearing on those which belong to another. A history which gives anything like a complete narrative of past events must investigate the facts pertaining to all sides of a nation's life. Book Description
Excerpt from American Civics Handbook: Containing a Brief Outline of American Civil Government and United States History This book is the outgrowth of class-room experience. It is published because of a demand from friends for copies of the notes which are the basis of the text. For several years the author vainly tried to correlate Civil Government and United States History in a single course of one semester by the use of several texts; the vanity of the effort caused the preparation of the notes of which this book is the elaboration. After five years of use, in manuscript, he has found the plan outlined within these pages eminently successful and he presents it to the public with the hope that it may be of use to others.
