Book Description
Excerpt from The Outlines of General Pathology The following chapters, with the exception of the last two, have appeared at intervals under the title of Med ical Essays, in the St. Louis Medical and Surgical Jour nal. When the author concluded to publish them in the present form it was his intention to make considerable additions to them and some changes, not, however, af fecting the principles therein advocated. He has not had the leisure to do this - nor even to superintend the cor recting of the proof-sheets, for Which he is indebted to his friend and pupil, mr. Lonergan. The critic may, perhaps, justly find fault with the style Which pervades many of the chapters. The author would have modified it but for the reason just given. The critic may find fault With the doctrines advocated the author has seen no reason to change or modify them. Book Description
Excerpt from Text-Book of General Pathology Attempts have been made to formulate a conception of health on a statistical basis by establishing standards of average capacity. On such a basis health would be defined as the condition of the individual which most closely approached to the average standard of the race. The, possession of health, however, is so frequently associated with a wide departure from such an average that such a method becomes useless, and the subjective sensation forms the only satisfactory means of judging of the existence of health. Book Description
Excerpt from Syllabus of General Pathology The method adopted to attain this end is the result of ten years' experience as student and teacher of Pathology, and is calculated to form a foundation upon which the student is to build his own individual superstructure. The typography, punctuation and syntax are all adapted to this end, fi. E., to emphasize each fact in proportion to its relative importance; and for this reason, grammar and diction have not been regarded beyond the bare requirements of correct language. It is earnestly hoped that the work may prove a source of benefit and guidance to those whom it is intended to assist.
