Book Description
This book discusses what is now called "Buddhism". It started as an effort to strengthen a weak point in that "immanence" which had become the accepted religious teaching in the valley of the Ganges, by showing that the "God/in/man" was realizable, not by gnosis and ritual, but in conduct. Conduct needed to be brought into relgion, into the relation between man and his eternal destiny. Man’s being is more truly becoming; and only in and by becoming a More, will he attain to an actual, not potential Most. In teaching a More worth in conduction, Buddhism brought in a teaching of the man himself as Less.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Outline of Buddhism The object of this book is intended to give the reader an outline of the general history of Buddhism, together with the life of Buddha Sakyamuni and his doctrine in brief. It is but just, however, that I should own here, being far from an original, the bulk of the present volume is largely taken from the several works of older scholars of great fame on this subject, and the reader will, no doubt, also find many similar statements through the writings of some Western scholars. Where I differ from my predecessors in this undertaking is, that I have endeavored to compile the present work in gathering materials considered only as orthodox Buddhism. So the first chapter on the life of Buddha, for instance, is mostly derived from the Northern Buddhist canons, using seldom any of the Southern text. The second chapter on the general history of Buddhism is simply a rearrangement of older texts. The third chapter on the teachings of Buddha is, likewise, a translation of the common canon wildly used among the Japanese Buddhists. The sole aim of my present undertaking, as stated above, being simply to present a fair glimpse of this much talked of Buddhism to the general readers of this continent. If one desires to investigate more fully, I would respectfully refer the reader to those learned works of distinguished Orientalists, such as Max Müller, Oldenberg, Eitel, Beal, Rhys Davids, Childers and Dr. Paul Carus. Excerpt from Outlines of Mahâyâna Buddhism The object of this book is twofold: (1) To refute the many wrong opinions which are entertained by Western critics concerning the fundamental teachings of Mahayana Buddhism; (2) To awake interest among scholars of comparative religion in the development of the religious sentiment and faith as exemplified by the growth of one of the most powerful spiritual forces in the world. The book is therefore at once popular and scholarly. It is popular in the sense that it tries to expose the fallacy of the general attitude assumed by other religionists towards Mahayanism. It aims to be scholarly, on the other hand, when it endeavors to expound some of the most salient features of the doctrine, historically and systematically. In attempting the accomplishment of this latter object, however, the author makes no great claim, because it is impossible to present within this prescribed space all the data that are available for a comprehensive and systematic elucidation of the Mahayana Buddhism, whose history began in the sixth century before the Christian era and ran through a period of more than two thousand years before it assumed the form in which it is at present taught in the Orient.
