Excerpt from Outlines of Anatomy and Physiology: Translated From the French The subject of Anatomy and Physiology, until quite recently, was never presented to the scholar, or to the public in general. Previous to that period its study had been limited to medical men only, and a certain degree of opprobrium even was attached to those engaged in Anatomical pursuits. But such a change has been gradually wrought in public opinion upon this subject, that now no system of education is considered complete, without some acquaintance with the human form and structure be included. The prejudice is fast passing away, nay has already passed, which has so long kept back from the many a knowledge of the healthy exercise of their organs and functions; and which no doubt in a great degree prevented more rapid advances from being made by physicians themselves in the intimate structure of the organs. Upon the importance of this study to the medical student it were needless to enlarge - the information obtained from it finds daily use with all, whether in diet, ventilation, clothing, broken bones, running, walking: not an act of the body can be performed without calling in question some point of physiology.
