St. Theophan (in the world Vasily Dmitrievich Bystrov) was born on the very last day of 1873 (Old Style) near St. Petersburg, in the village of Podmoshye, Novgorod province, in a large family of a rural priest, whose entire wealth consisted of the piety of his parents. /// The country was seized by growing passions on the eve of great and irreversible eschatological events. Archbishop Theophan was deeply shocked by the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II from the throne. He clearly understood that the Tsar made this step not only under the pressure of his entourage - for the Tsar, that was the last step on the path of serving the people, which he promised to protect. In the mid-1920s, Vladyka Theophan received an offer from the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church (its Chairman in 1925 was Metropolitan Kliment, who had studied at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with Vladyka) to move to Sofia. In the capital of Bulgaria, Vladyka was provided with two rooms in the Synodal Chamber. By the way, the relocation of Archbishop Theophan was facilitated by the Ruling Bishop of the Russian Churches in Bulgaria, Bishop Seraphim of Lubensk (Sobolev), who had been ordained [on October 1, 1920] by Archbishop Theophan as Vicar of the Poltava Diocese. Archbishop Theophan lived for five years in Bulgaria, in Sofia and Varna (he came to this city in the summer to restore his health). On April 16/29, 1931, he left hospitable Bulgaria for good and moved to France, to Paris, where he lived very secluded, since the time was hectic. After living for several years under almost constant surveillance and wanting to find a safe home, he, along with the Porokhov family, in whose Paris house he was hiding, moved to the small town of Moun. After the death of the Porokhov couple that followed soon, Vladyka accepted the offer of the former Poltava landowner Maria Vasilievna Fedchenko and moved to her in the town of Limeret, where she lived in her small estate. He settled there on September 1, 1939. Collection of all the writings by ArchBp. Theophan of Poltava : Theology, letters, words... The title only shows my admiration for his understanding and living. A Generous Orthodoxy
Author: Brian D. McLaren
Publisher: Zondervan
ISBN: 0310565790
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
A confession and manifesto from a senior leader in the emerging church movement. A Generous Orthodoxy calls for a radical, Christ-centered orthodoxy of faith and practice in a missional, generous spirit. Brian McLaren argues for a post-liberal, post-conservative, post-protestant convergence, which will stimulate lively interest and global conversation among thoughtful Christians from all traditions. In a sweeping exploration of belief, author Brian McLaren takes us across the landscape of faith, envisioning an orthodoxy that aims for Jesus, is driven by love, and is defined by missional intent. A Generous Orthodoxy rediscovers the mysterious and compelling ways that Jesus can be embraced across the entire Christian horizon. Rather than establishing what is and is not “orthodox,” McLaren walks through the many traditions of faith, bringing to the center a way of life that draws us closer to Christ and to each other. Whether you find yourself inside, outside, or somewhere on the fringe of Christianity, A Generous Orthodoxy draws you toward a way of living that looks beyond the “us/them” paradigm to the blessed and ancient paradox of “we.”

The Heresy of Orthodoxy (Foreword by I. Howard Marshall)
Author: Andreas J. Köstenberger
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433521792
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 252
Book Description
Beginning with Walter Bauer in 1934, the denial of clear orthodoxy in early Christianity has shaped and largely defined modern New Testament criticism, recently given new life through the work of spokesmen like Bart Ehrman. Spreading from academia into mainstream media, the suggestion that diversity of doctrine in the early church led to many competing orthodoxies is indicative of today's postmodern relativism. Authors Köstenberger and Kruger engage Ehrman and others in this polemic against a dogged adherence to popular ideals of diversity. Köstenberger and Kruger's accessible and careful scholarship not only counters the "Bauer Thesis" using its own terms, but also engages overlooked evidence from the New Testament. Their conclusions are drawn from analysis of the evidence of unity in the New Testament, the formation and closing of the canon, and the methodology and integrity of the recording and distribution of religious texts within the early church.

Three Views on Eastern Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism
Author: Zondervan,
Publisher: Zondervan Academic
ISBN: 0310864364
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
Are Eastern Orthodoxy and evangelicalism at all compatible? To some Western evangelicals, the practices of Eastern Orthodoxy seem mysterious and perhaps even unbiblical. From an Orthodox perspective, evangelicals lack the spiritual roots provided by centuries-old church traditions. Are the differences between these two branches of Christianity as sharp as they seem? Or is there room for agreement? This book allows five leading authorities to present their different views in a respectful manner, have them critiqued by their fellow authors, and then respond to those critiques. Writing from an Orthodox perspective with a strong appreciation for evangelicalism, Bradley Nassif makes a case for compatibility. Michael Horton and Vladimir Berzonsky take the opposite stance from their respective evangelical and Orthodox backgrounds. And George Hancock-Stefan (evangelical) and Edward Rommen (Orthodox) each offer a qualified "perhaps." The interactive Counterpoints forum is ideal for comparing and contrasting the different positions to understand the strengths and weaknesses of these two important branches of Christianity and to form a personal conclusion regarding their compatibility.

Singing the Right Way
Author: Jeffers Engelhardt
Publisher:
ISBN: 0199332134
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
Singing the Right Way enters the world of Orthodox Christianity in Estonia to explore musical style in worship, cultural identity, and social imagination. Through both ethnographic and historical chapters, author Jeffers Engelhardt reveals how Orthodox Estonians give voice to the religious absolute in secular society. Based on a decade of fieldwork, Singing the Right Way traces the sounds of Orthodoxy in Estonia through the Russian Empire, interwar national independence, the Soviet-era, and post-Soviet integration into the European Union. Approaching Orthodoxy through local understandings of correct practice and correct belief, Engelhardt shows how religious knowledge, national identity, and social transformation illuminate how to "sing the right way" and thereby realize the fullness of Estonians' Orthodox Christian faith in context of everyday, secular surroundings. Singing the Right Way is an innovative model of how the musical poetics of contemporary religious forms are rooted in both consistent sacred tradition and contingent secular experience. This landmark study is sure to be an essential text for scholars studying the ethnomusicology of religion.

With All the Fullness of God
Author: Jared Ortiz
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1978707274
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 279
Book Description
Christians confess that Christ came to save us from sin and death. But what did he save us for? One beautiful and compelling answer to this question is that God saved us for union with him so that we might become “partakers of the divine nature” (1 Pet 2:4), what the Christian tradition has called “deification.” This term refers to a particular vision of salvation which claims that God wants to share his own divine life with us, uniting us to himself and transforming us into his likeness. While often thought to be either a heretical notion or the provenance of Eastern Orthodoxy, this book shows that deification is an integral part of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and many Protestant denominations. Drawing on the resources of their own Christian heritages, eleven scholars share the riches of their respective traditions on the doctrine of deification. In this book , scholars and pastor-scholars from diverse Christian expressions write for both a scholarly and lay audience about what God created us to be: adopted children of God who are called, even now, to “be filled with all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:19).

The Russian Church and the Papacy
Author: Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781888992298
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
The Russian Church and the Papacy, edited by Father Ray Ryland, is an abridgement of Vladimir Soloviev's classic work, Russia and the Universal Church. This is a powerful defense of the papacy from Soloviev, a Russian Orthodox theologian who was committed to the cause of Christian unity and spent years attempting to convince his Orthodox brethren to reunite with Rome. Soloviev uses Scripture, history, and hardheaded logic to prove that the papacy is essential to Christian unity and truth, and without it the early Christian Church would have disintegrated into hundreds of competing sects.
