Book Description
Excerpt from Organ Registration IN planning a work Of this character, which requires the expression of a great deal of personal opinion, it is evident, at the outset, that the author renders himself a target for considerable criticism, from those organists who happen to entertain different opinions on any branch of the subject. I am not unmindful of the fact that the success of the work would perhaps be assured, if it were possible to pronounce Opinions with which every organist would agree. From the nature of the subject itself, and from a great diversity of personal tastes, any one can see that such a course is absolutely impossible. Book Description
Excerpt from A Primer of Organ Registration In preparing this Primer of Organ Registration for the use of teachers and pupils, the author has been led in his work by the realization of two important facts: first, that the potential organist is greatly in need of help in grasping the principles of registration; second, that it is an utter physical impossibility to formulate rules which will be operative in enough cases to justify their own existence! The first point is enlarged upon in the Brief Survey with which this work begins. A word on the second point may not be inappropriate. Book Description
Excerpt from Organ-Stops and Their Artistic Registration: Names, Forms, Construction, Tonalities, and Offices in Scientific Combination It is hoped that the work will be accepted as a text-book in Organ Schools and Conservatories of Music, leading toward, and lending help to, a branch Of study Of the greatest value and impor tance to the organ student; but one which, in too many quarters, has been seriously neglected. That a thorough knowledge of the tonal forces Of the Organ and their varied powers in scientific and artistic combination and registration, for the production Of special and expressive qualities Of both compound, unimitative organ, and imitative orchestral tones, is essential to the accomplished organist, admits of no question. Accordingly, it is highly desirable that the student should leave the organ school with, at least, a foundation laid for that thorough knowledge. It is with the earnest desire to contribute effectively to the laying Of that foundation that the present work is placed at the command of both teachers and pupils. Book Description
Excerpt from The Organ in France: A Study of Its Mechanical Construction, Tonal Characteristics and Literature, With Suggestions for the Registration, of French Organ Music Upon American Instruments The relation of these improvements to the previously established conception of the organ as an instrument, and of its legitimate function, it is not my province to discuss. Many believe that the new methods have emancipated the organ from the fetters of mechanical limitations, while others maintain that at least in ex treme cases an essentially new instrument has been evolved, possessing a field of usefulness and demanding an individuality of treatment peculiarly its own. One thing is certain: that under discriminating and skilful direction the new methods adopted in recent years have given our organ-builders of to-day the opportunity to produce work possessing at once such artistic excellence and interesting possibilities as could seldom have been vouchsafed to their predecessors, working under existing limitations. Only the future can determine the exact value of these new methods. When judiciously employed, it is in contestable that they will greatly increase the technical possibilities of the organ. But to prove their artistic as well as their commercial value, they must awaken a corresponding development of musical faculties on the part of executants, and stimulate interest in the organ among musicians and composers. Especially must the latter be inspired to augment a repertoire which is none too rich in modern works of genuine musical importance. Book Description
Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 56: Official Organ of the Undergraduate Body of the Boston Latin School, Avenue Louis Pasteur Boston, Mass.; Winter Number, February, 1937 I climbed out of the car in which I had spent the better part of the past two days and looked over the town and hotel in which we were to spend the night. It was the typical small Western town, as portrayed by the movies; that is, it had everything except the cowboys. The few inhabitants that could be seen were either sitting on the stairs of the various houses and drowsing or walking aimlessly down the street. I turned from the scene and followed my father into the hotel. Inside was more action than there was in the streets. Four men were talking near the counter; that is, one man was talking, and the other three were listen ing with what appeared to be grins on their faces.
