From humble and obscure beginnings, mainly self-educated, and following a religious path often mired in uncertainty, Orestes Brownson (1803-1876), preacher, journalist, editor, and philosopher, rose to become an important and often controversial figure in nineteenth century America. Author Edward Power focuses on Brownson's ideas and their influence on nineteenth century public and Catholic education in the United States. He introduces Brownson's theory of educational authority and responsibility, and then explores his opinions on the character of Catholic and public schools.
