Orbital Tumors
Author: Zeynel A. Karcioglu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387270868
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 444
Book Description
From the Preface: “About every ten years a new book appears on any given medical specialty subject. Naturally, this is not because the entire body of knowledge on that specialty is overhauled every ten years but because the progress made over a decade usually warrants expressing new perspectives on quite a few diseases. Orbital oncology certainly qualifies as a subspecialty that merits an update every decade. At least two or three excellent textbooks on orbital tumors have been written since the mid-1980s. This book reports advances in knowledge about orbital diseases and their treatment and offers an up-to-date, single-volume reference for orbital tumors with particular emphasis on new improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Part I comprises advances in oncogenesis and its relationship to orbital tumors. Changes in the biological behavior of diseases in the general patient population are much slower than technological advances; nevertheless, those alterations take place as well. One of the major medical issues of our time, for example, is the changes in the immunological status of individuals. This issue influences the entire field of medicine, particularly oncology, including the treatment of orbital tumors. Chapters 2 to 5 summarize these influences. Medical genetics gained momentum during the past two decades and now affects the clinical practice of almost every discipline of medicine, including ophthalmology and orbitology. Chapters on principles of molecular genetics and immunosurveillance mechanisms of neoplasia and on the occurrence of multiplt, malignant neoplasms in retinoblastoma have been included to apply molecular concepts to clinical practice related to orbital tumors. Advances in one discipline often directly benefit practice in another field. In orbitology, no development has been more influential than the revolution in imaging techniques, including ultrasonography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance methods. Four chapters in Part II are devoted to the role of imaging in diganosis of orbital tumors. Other diagnostic advances entailing immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, gene microarray, and the polymerase chain reaction are summarized in a separate chapter on orbital biopsy.”

Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors
Author: R.H. Sagerman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642559107
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 334
Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition of Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors in 1993 the treatment programs for cure have changed from the dominance of surgical resection to the utilization of radiation therapy with preservation of the eye intact and preservation of vision. In 2002 about 2,300 primary eye tumors will be diagnosed in the United states, 75% of which will be choroidal melanomas, 20% retinoblastomas, and the remainder a wide variety of tumors - malignant lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcomas, liposarcomas, meningiomas, malignant fibrous histiocytomas, etc. Even so, the majority of malignant tumors of the eye are metastatic, primarily from cancers of the lung or breast. The impact of newer imaging studies, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound with and without contrast medium, have allowed for better tumor definition, more precise treatment techniques, and major improvement in local control, with preservation of the eye intact and excellent survival. The better histologic definition of the tumor has selected more appropriately the cases suitable for adjuvant chemotherapy particularly demonstrated by the combined integrated multimodal treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma without enucleation. Surgical techniques are now being reserved for biopsy and for treatment failures, a dramatic change in treatment approaches since 1993. The second edition by Sagerman and Alberti clearly demonstrates this major change in treatment. The volume explores the impact of diagnostic workup, the role of surgery, the role of external beam radiation therapy, the use of radioactive plaques, photocoagulation, cryotherapy, and other less major surgical procedures.

WHO Classification of Tumours of the Eye
Author: Hans E. Grossniklaus
Publisher: International Agency for Research on Cancer
ISBN: 9789283244974
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The WHO Classification of Tumours of the Eye is the 12th and final volume in the 4th edition of the WHO series on the classification of human tumors. The series (also known as the Blue Books) has long been regarded by pathologists as the gold standard for the diagnosis of tumors, and it is an indispensable guide for the design of evaluations, clinical trials, and studies involving cancer. These authoritative and concise reference books provide an international standard for anyone involved in cancer research or the care of cancer patients. Diagnostic criteria, pathological features, and genetic and other associated molecular alterations are described in a disease-oriented manner. This volume updates the existing ICD-O codes and provides new codes for use in epidemiology and cancer registration. It also provides information on clinical features, pathology, genetics, programs, and protective factors for each of the tumor types covered. The editors expect that this volume will be of particular interest to pathologists, oncologists, and ophthalmologists who manage or research tumors of the eye. Sections are included on all recognized neoplasms (and their variants) of the eye, lacrimal apparatus, and conjunctiva. There have been particularly substantial changes to the classification of conjunctival neoplasia and melanoma, based on the latest information from genetic and molecular studies. An e-book version of this title is also available. If you have already purchased the print product and wish to have the e-version as well, IARC is offering special top-up pricing. Proof of purchase will be required for customers to avail themselves of this order.
