Book Description
As delays are incurred in implementing reprocessing and in planning for geological repositories, storage of increasing quantities of spent fuel for extended durations is becoming a reality. Accordingly, effective management of spent fuel continues to be a priority topic within the IAEA and its Member States. As an example, cask designers face evolving challenges including long term storage of higher burnup fuel with correspondingly higher initial enrichments, the use of mixed oxide (MOX) fuel, and obtaining regulatory approval for the use of burnup credit. As a result, the IAEA has organized a series of meetings to identify cask loading optimization issues in preparation for a technical report on Optimization of Cask/Container Loading for Long Term Spent Fuel Storage. This publication outlines the optimization process for cask design, licensing and utilization, describing three principal groups of optimization activities in terms of relevant technical considerations (e.g. criticality, thermal shielding, structural design, operation, maintenance and retrievability).--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Description
This publication is a new edition of Technical Reports Series No. 240, Guidebook on Spent Fuel Storage (1991). It aims to provide guidance on spent fuel storage options, describing the history and observed trends of spent fuel storage technologies, gathering operational experiences and lessons learned. The evolving aspects related to higher burnup and mixed oxide (MOX) spent fuel, and the extension of storage timeframes are detailed. It also includes information on the distribution of the current global inventory of spent fuel by storage systems, a description of (and terminology relating to) available spent fuel storage technologies and different storage facility locations.

Book Description
This publication is a revision by amendment of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSG-15 and provides recommendations and guidance on the storage of spent nuclear fuel. It covers all types of storage facility and all types of spent fuel from nuclear power plants and research reactors. It takes into consideration the longer storage periods beyond the original design lifetime of the storage facility that have become necessary owing to delays in the development of disposal facilities and the reduction in reprocessing activities. It also considers developments associated with nuclear fuel, such as higher enrichment, mixed oxide fuels and higher burnup. Guidance is provided on all stages in the lifetime of a spent fuel storage facility, from planning through siting and design to operation and decommissioning. The revision was undertaken by amending, adding and/or deleting specific paragraphs addressing recommendations and findings from studying the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.

Book Description
The licensing of spent fuel storage casks is generally based on conservative analyses that assume a storage system being uniformly loaded with design basis fuel. The design basis fuel typically assumes a maximum assembly enrichment, maximum burn up, and minimum cooling time. These conditions set the maximum decay heat loads and radioactive source terms for the design. Recognizing that reactor spent fuel pools hold spent fuel with an array of initial enrichments, burners, and cooling times, this study was performed to evaluate the effect of load pattern on peak cladding temperature and cask surface dose rate. Based on the analysis, the authors concluded that load patterns could be used to reduce peak cladding temperatures in a cask without adversely impacting the surface dose rates.

Book Description
ABSTRACT Dry storage cask designs for spent nuclear fuel are submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for certification under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 72, “Licensing Requirements for the Independent Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel, High- Level Radioactive Waste, and Reactor-Related Greater Than Class C Waste.” The NRC staff technical review of these designs is performed in accordance with 10 CFR Part 72 and the “Standard Review Plan (SRP) for Spent Fuel Dry Storage Systems at a General License Facility” (NUREG-1536, 2010). To ensure that the cask and fuel material temperatures of the dry cask storage system will remain within the allowable limits or criteria for normal, off-normal, and accident conditions, a thermal review is performed as part of the application's technical review. Recent applications increasingly have used thermal-hydraulic analyses and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes (e.g., FLUENT) to demonstrate the adequacy of the thermal design. Therefore, in cooperation with the Division of Spent Fuel Storage and Transportation of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research developed this guide to provide practical advice for reviewing CFD methods used in vendor applications and for achieving high-quality CFD simulations of a dry cask. To assist in the analysis, the report includes procedures, analysis methods, and acceptable assumptions.
