Book Description
The demand on land to produce food, for urban development such as housing, industry, shopping areas, infrastructure and also for recreation has increased during the history of mankind. This has resulted in such activities as the reclamation of swamps, flood plains, tidal areas and even lakes by impoldering. Model simulations can be use to gain insight into the system behaviour of different land use and soil composition under temperate humid and humid tropic conditions, The existing package OPOL, based on a non steady model, was further developed to the version OPOL5 for the simulation of hydrological conditions and optimization of the main components of water management systems in polder areas in the temperate humid and humid tropical zone. This model reveals a system's behaviour as well as the effects of variation in the main components of the systems to the overall costs. For example, the designs of pumped drainage systems in polder areas can be optimized by varying the main components until the annual equivalent costs are minimum. A GIS tool has been used to complement OPOL5 for the simulation of the real situation in an area with respect to land use, damage, topography, and soil type. The model package has been applied to two case studies: one in the temperate humid zone, namely the Netherlands and to Thailand in the humid tropical zone.

Soil Water Conservation
Author: Saskia Keesstra
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3038978523
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Human needs like food and clean water are directly related to good maintenance of healthy and productive soils. A good understanding of human impact on the natural environment is therefore necessary to preserve and manage soil and water resources. This knowledge is particularly important in semi-arid and arid regions, where the increasing demands on limited water supplies require urgent efforts to improve water quality and water use efficiency. It is important to keep in mind that both soil and water are limited resources. Thus, wise use of these natural resources is a fundamental prerequisite for the sustainability of human societies. This book collects 15 original scientific contributions addressing the state of the art of soil and water conservation research. Contributions cover a wide range of topics, including (1) recovery of soil hydraulic properties; (2) erosion risk; (3) novel modeling, monitoring and experimental approaches for soil hydraulic characterization; (4) improvement of crop yields; (5) water availability; and (6) soil salinity. This collection provides more insights into conservation strategies for effective and sustainable soil and water management.

Automation 2020: Towards Industry of the Future
Author: Roman Szewczyk
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030409716
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
This book presents the scientific outcomes of the International Conference AUTOMATION 2020, held on March 18–20, 2020 in Warsaw, Poland. The next 30 years will see radical innovations in production processes, transportation management and social life. The changes brought about by the transformation to zero-emission industry require advances in many fields, but especially in industrial automation, robotics and measurement techniques associated with the cyber-physical systems employing artificial intelligence that will be key to reducing costs and enabling European society to maintain its quality of live. In this context, the book features the latest research toward further developing these fields of engineering, and also offers solutions and guidelines that are useful for both researchers and engineers addressing problems associated with the world of ongoing radical changes.

Moving from water problems to water solutions: research needs assessment for the eastern Gangetic Plains
Author: Sharma, Bharat R.;
Publisher: IWMI
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 103
Book Description
The workshop organizers had previously identified three pillars that directly influence land and water resources, its policies and institutions at a regional scale. These were: (1) Availability of the resources; (2) Access to the resources; and (3) Achievements that can be obtained through the use of the resources (yields, productivity and income enhancement from these land and water resources). The two-day workshop focused on identifying appropriate research questions that would help improve the livelihoods of the rural poor in these three areas to cope with spatial and temporal variability, and scarcity, of available land and water resources, improve farmers’ access to these resources and ensure their distribution in an equitable manner, and achieve optimal productivity.
