Book Description
This study gives a description about the development of a computer model, RealPipe, which relates genetic algorithm (GA) to the well known problem of least-cost design of water distribution network. GA methodology is an evolutionary process, basically imitating evolution process of nature. GA is essentially an efficient search method basically for nonlinear optimization cases. The genetic operations take place within the population of chromosomes. By means of various operators, the genetic knowledge in chromosomes change continuously and the success of the population progressively increases as a result of these operations. GA optimization is also well suited for optimization of water distribution systems, especially large and complex systems. The primary objective of this study is optimization of a water distribution network by GA. GA operations are realized on a special program developed by the author called RealPipe. RealPipe optimizes given water network distribution systems by considering capital cost of pipes only.

Book Description
This book provides essential background knowledge on the development of model-based real-world solutions in the field of control and decision making for water systems. It presents system engineering methods for modelling surface water and groundwater resources as well as water transportation systems (rivers, channels and pipelines). The models in turn provide information on both the water quantity (flow rates, water levels) of surface water and groundwater and on water quality. In addition, methods for modelling and predicting water demand are described. Sample applications of the models are presented, such as a water allocation decision support system for semi-arid regions, a multiple-criteria control model for run-of-river hydropower plants, and a supply network simulation for public services.

Book Description
Millions of dollars are spent each year on water distribution systems. Pipe optimization techniques provide an opportunity for potential savings in costs for water supply systems. These optimization techniques include linear programming, non-linear programming, dynamic programming, enumerative approaches, and genetic algorithms. The former four techniques have been applied to pipe network optimization in the research literature over the last 20 years or so. Genetic algorithms provide a new approach to pipe network optimization. Details of this method are considered in this thesis. A global cost analysis of each component in a water supply system is carried out of the genetic algorithm in order to assess the form of the objective function. Traditionally, the analysis an pipeline systems has focused on the steady state. In the current work, a genetic algorithm optimization model, which uses a probabilistic search procedure that emulates Darwinian natural selection, is coupled with a transient hydraulic simulation model to generate and evaluate trial pipe network designs in search of an optimal solution. A new and powerful penalty function is also developed for pressure violations distinguishing steady state and transient conditions. The genetic algorithm search is applied to a case study which demonstrates its flexibility and the opportunity for significant cost saving offered by this method.

Book Description
Water distributions systems generally do not operate at or their optimal points. The operational procedures of these systems should be reworked to make them more economically efficient. The ability to optimize (i.e., for economic efficiency) the operation of water distribution systems is hindered by the dimensionally (i.e., many different subsystems to optimize simultaneously) inherent in these systems. This is especially true for small time steps, pumping systems utilizing multiple pumps and distribution networks with multiple storage tanks. A branch of computer science called Genetic Algorithms has been shown to be very effective for optimizing complex systems. Genetic Algorithms are utilized in Two computer programs developed in this thesis. These programs were tested against simple water distribution systems and produced optimal solutions in a very short period of time. The architecture (i.e., program structure) for future computer programs that are based on the platform created in this thesis is also presented. These proposed versions should be useful in the optimization of large water distribution systems, something which has never been possible before.

Book Description
Design of water distribution networks is traditionally based on trial-and-approach in which the designer assumes, based on experience and judgment, sizes of different elements and successively modifies them until a network with satisfactory hydraulic performance is obtained. This text covers: Essential hydraulic, economic optimization principles. Theory is developed gradually for optimal design of simple, single-source branched networks subjected to single loading to complex, multiple-source looped networks subjected to multiple loading. Strengthening and expansion of existing networks and also reliability-based design. Several illustrative examples enabling the reader to apply them in practice- approximately 100 line drawings.

Book Description
A considerable amount of scientific evidence has been collected leading to the conclusion that urban wastewater components should be designed as one integrated system, in order to protect the receiving waters cost-effectively. Moreover, there is a need to optimize the design and operation of the sewerage network and wastewater treatment plant (WwTP) considering the dynamic interactions between them and the receiving waters. This book introduces a method called Model Based Design and Control (MoDeCo) for the optimum design and control of urban wastewater components. The book presents a detailed description of the integration of modelling tools for the sewer, the wastewater treatment plants and the rivers. The complex modelling structure used for the integrated model challenge previous applications of integrated modelling approaches presented in scientific literature. The combination of modelling tools and multi-objective evolutionary algorithms demonstrated in this book represent an excellent tool for designers and managers of urban wastewater infrastructure. This book also presents two alternatives to solve the computing demand of the optimization of integrated systems in practical applications: the use of surrogate modelling tools and the use of cloud computer infrastructure for parallel computing.
