El libro presenta los desarrollos de varios casos reales entre 1999 y 2016, e incluye algunos resultados del proyecto de investigación titulado "Modelos matemáticos V métodos de solución para la optimización de cadenas de abastecimiento internacionales con precios de transferencia", relacionado con uno de los casos industriales que se presentan. Este proyecto fue desarrollado dentro del grupo de investigación en Logística y Producción de la Universidad del Valle, con financiación de la Convocatoria Interna 2010, entre septiembre de 2010 y enero de 2013. Ha sido fundamental la transferencia de estas experiencias de extensión e investigación para enriquecer el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje y las estrategias de investigación tanto en los programas de pregrado como de posgrado. Se incluye una breve revisión de literatura sobre las cadenas de abastecimiento y los elementos básicos para su planeación y optimización. Relaciona además los problemas de localización de instalaciones con los problemas de optimización de cadenas de abastecimiento y describe los principales requerimientos de información para poder aplicar modelos de optimización en el área. Los resultados de corto, mediano y largo plazo obtenidos en cada proyecto demuestran la gran utilidad de los modelos matemáticos aplicados para el mejoramiento del proceso de toma de decisiones, entre otras, para la optimización de cadenas de abastecimiento a todo nivel, lo que mejora la competitividad de las organizaciones, las cuales a su vez deberían transmitir dichos resultados a la sociedad.
