The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, monitors annual spawning escapements of Pacific salmon within the Yakutat Management Area. Aerial and ground surveys are methods used to develop escapement estimates of sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka, Chinook O. Tshawytcha, and coho O. kisutch salmon. Inseason assessment of salmon runs plays an important role in the management of the Yakutat commercial, subsistence, and sport fisheries where harvest adjustments can be made in order to meet escapement goals. This report provides operational guidelines for the locations and methods for conducting systematic surveys for obtaining peak index counts of local salmon stocks.

The Russian River sockeye salmon escapement assessment project, which began in 1962, is one of the oldest stock assessment projects in the state of Alaska. During 2023–2026, the Russian River weir will be operated annually from early June through the first 7 to 10 days of September. All species of fish seen passing the weir through the fish chute will be enumerated daily. Sampling of sockeye salmon for age, sex, and length data will be done each Friday, and the sample size each week will be based on the previous week’s fish passage. Sockeye and Chinook salmon spawning downstream of the Russian River weir to the confluence of the Russian River and the Kenai River will be assessed by a foot survey during the fourth week of August. Multiple foot surveys will also be conducted from mid-May to 10 June to assess spawning rainbow trout.

It showcases how flexibility can be introduced in the fisheries management cycle in order to foster adaptation, strengthen the resilience of fisheries, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and enable managers to respond in a timely manner to the projected changes in the dynamics of marine resources and ecosystems. The publication includes a set of good practices for climate-adaptive fisheries management that have proven their effectiveness and can be adapted to different contexts, providing a range of options for stakeholders including the fishing industry, fishery managers, policymakers and others involved in decision-making. These good practices were linked to one or more of the three common climate-related impacts on fisheries resources: distributional change; productivity change; and species composition change. Therefore, these three impacts can serve as practical entry points to guide decision-makers in identifying good practice adaptation measures suitable for their local contexts. Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.
