Book Description
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the safety and operational characteristics of the single point urban interchange (SPUI) and the diamond interchange (DI) and develop guidelines that identify traffic and/or geometric conditions that favor one type of interchange over the other. State traffic engineers across the country were surveyed as to their experiences and opinions of the two types of interchanges in terms of operational performance and safety. Accident and operational data were also obtained for nine SPUIs and eight DIs. The interchange operations were studied using both field data and the computer simulation program TRAF-NETSIM. In addition, for each DI simulated, an SPUI counterpart was designed with the same geometric and traffic conditions for further comparison. No significant differences were found in the off-ramp, cross road, and overall interchange average delay. Ten volume scenarios were then developed and simulated for both interchanges at low- and high-volume conditions to analyze the effect of various traffic patterns on the relative operational performance of each interchange type. The accident data for the SPUIs and DIs were compared according to severity, collision type, and location on the interchange. No significant differences were found between the severity distribution and rates of the two interchange types. However, the proportion of on-ramp and off-ramp accidents was greater at the SPUI, and the proportion of accidents occurring in the center of the signalized intersection was greater at the DI. The proportion of angle accidents was greater at DIs than at SPUIs, whereas the proportions of rearend on-ramp, sideswipe, and fixed object accidents were greater at SPUIs. Vehicle conflicts at four interchanges in Virginia were also investigated and used along with the accident analysis results. The operational results, safety analyses, literature review, and survey of state engineers were used to develop guidelines to aid traffic engineers in the selection and design of the appropriate interchange type.

Book Description
Signalized urban interchanges are frequently used as junctions between freeways and local arterials to date. In recent years, many new interchange or intersection designs like Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) and Continuous-flow Intersection (CFI) have emerged across the world. However, most of the interchanges are still using conventional urban interchange designs. Among new designs, Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) and Tight Diamond Interchange (TDI) are the most popular. Comparison and evaluation of the safety and operation of interchanges are important in transportation engineering to choose the most appropriate option for a location. Recently, many research have been devoted to the standard TDI and SPUI. Most of them consistently prove that the SPUI outperforms TDI in operation efficiency, but few research have compared the SPUI with frontage road (SPUI-F) with TDI. This research aims to fill this gap. With this motivation, there was a real case which could be used as testing the operational efficiency between the TDI and SPUI-F. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) switched the TDI, which was located at I-580/Plumb Ln, to SPUI-F in 2003. Since this interchange has experienced TDI and SPUI-F, the Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) for each of them can be compared. To perform this comparison, layouts of both interchanges were modeled in VISSIM. The models were calibrated using the existing volume. Several volume scenario groups were designed for testing the operational efficiency of both options. Three MOEs, including average delay, average speed and average queue length, were selected to show the operational efficiency. The results revealed that the TDI is more efficient in comparison to the SPUI-F. However, TDI might not satisfy the driver’s expectation because of the stopping between the two signals, for which SPUI-F does not have such a problem.

Book Description
In Virginia, when new construction or major reconstruction is planned, the current practice is for a location and design engineer to select the interchange type for a given location. The engineer relies upon projected traffic data, right-of-way needs, environmental concerns, safety, and project costs to determine which interchange configuration will most efficiently serve the needs of a certain area. The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to aid designers in the preliminary selection of the optimum interchange type at a location. This study will provide engineers a starting point to begin their analyses. It is hoped that the development of these guidelines will result in reduced costs, improved levels of service, and increased uniformity. A number of sources were used to develop the guidelines. A literature and a nationwide survey of state engineers helped determine current methods for interchange selection. These surveys also assisted in determining the relative advantages and disadvantages of the various interchange types. Also, 10 interchanges throughout Virginia were studied in order to find their operational and safety characteristics. Extensive computer simulations of the interchange types were performed in order to determine traffic characteristics that affected operations at the interchanges. Based on all of these sources, some general guidelines for preliminary interchange type selection were created.
