Edgerton, Germeshausen and Grier, Inc. (EG & G) furnished timing and firing signals for the thirty-seven shots of Operation Hardtack, Phase II. Six independent timing systems were installed in the CP-l building and in five timing signal distribution stations at the Nevada Test Site. Signals from the sequence timers were distributed to experimenters and to zero sites by wire; voice-time announcements were transmitted to experimenters on radio frequencies. The world-time system was operated on surface, tower, and balloon shots and on certain of the underground detonations. Most of the above-ground shots were instrumented for Bhangmeter recording.

On Operation Hardtack, arming and firing signals for 35 devices in addition to a sequence of timing signals for the experimental programs are presented. Also a voice countdown on all dry runs and detonations, monitoring vital information, and determining, where practicable, the time of burst and the Bhangmeter yield is included. The complexity of the shot schedule, which involved several differing modes of detonation, necessitated a multiple timing and firing installation comprising seven independent systems; three were operated from Eniwetok, two from Bikini, one on the USS Boxer, and one on Johnston Island (Operation Newsreel). Besides the four control centers, the timing and firing complex included nine island-based, signal distribution stations, as well as several ship board stations. A versatile timing system was devised for this operation which employed a coder-decoder combination capable of transmitting twenty-four signals. Signals were transmitted by telephone line or on radio frequencies as dictated by the individual shot requirements. The timing and firing system operated accurately and reliably, and all signals were transmitted. (Author).

This report describes the activities of an estimated 1,000 DoD personnel, both military and civilian, in Operation HARDTACK II, a nuclear testing series conducted in Nevada from 12 September to 30 October 1958. The series consisted of 37 events: 19 weapons tests and 18 safety experiments. DoD activities included scientific test participation, staff support, and air support. Radiological safety procedures were established and implemented to minimize individual radiation exposures.
