Book Description
Excerpt from O'neill and Ormond: A Chapter in Irish History The position of Bishop Bedell proves that this warring of the creeds was not the real national struggle of Ireland. Though it may have in uenced many to take the Irish side who would not otherwise have done so, it was a source of weakness rather than strength. It need only be remembered that Castlehaven gave Ormond the disastrous advice to hand Dublin over to Jones. Such allies to the Irish cause were hardly to be desired. Ireland, in fighting for existence, was, as usual, made the battle ground for contending forces wholly unconnected with her interests, but which were made to seem part of the Irish question. The King against the Parliament, the Catholic against the Protestant, were never vital Irish questions that they were made to seem so explains much of the tragic history of Ireland. These conclusions must, I think, be drawn by anyone who reads Irish history with an unprejudiced mind. In the body of this book I merely present the facts and leave the reader to draw the conclusion. Book Description
This remarkable memoir of immigration and assimilation provides a rare view of urban life in Chicago in the late 1800s by a newcomer to the city and the Midwest, and the nation as well. Francis O'Neill left Ireland in 1865. After five years traveling the world as a sailor, he and his family settled in Chicago just shortly before the Great Fire of 1871. His memoir also brings to life the challenges involved in succeeding in a new land, providing for his family, and integrating into a new culture. Francis O'Neill serves as a fine documentarian of the Irish immigrant experience in Chicago.
