Book Description
Frank O'Connor (1903-1966) is known primarily for his short stories, and fine ones they are. There are seventeen of them in this Reader, and the best of them, in the words of Richard Ellmann "stir those facial muscles which, we are told, are the same for both laughing and weeping." Except for the masterpiece, "Guests of the Nation," the stories included here have been out of print for twenty years, and one story had been previously unpublished. But this is a Reader and it celebrates the creative diversity of one of this century's finest writers. Here one can also sample O'Connor's skillful translations of Irish poetry, including "The Lament for Art O'Leary." There are a number of self-portraits, including "Meet Frank O'Connor" and "Writing a Story-One Man's Way." The final section includes a number of O'Connor's finest essays, from pieces on Yeats, Joyce, and Mozart, to ones on English and Irish pubs and one simply titled, "Ireland": "No one who does not love the sense of the past should ever come near us; nobody who does, whatever our faults may be, should give us the hard word."

Book Description
A year has passed since Elly the elf returned home to Alendria after being stranded in the human realm of Gaya. She has been undergoing exhaustive training with the Order of Kaizendil, and though she has learned to teleport, wield a sword, and use a bow and arrow with some skill, she is utterly terrified of the impending task that awaits her: to seek out the Four Guardians of Gaya in the hopes that they will restore the four poisoned orbs of power that sustain the Tree of Alendria. After a years wait, the Order finally receives the first signal from Graille, the Guardian of Light. As Elly embarks on a dangerous journey in Gaya to find the Guardian, she gets caught in a web of intrigue that takes her all the way to Korea, where she meets an old woman and her grandson who turn out to be pivotal to the restoration of the first orb. Along the way, she learns of a deep, dark secret that the adults in her life have kept from her since her birth, a devastating truth about a girl named Goldie, who has been hiding out in London from her abusive foster mother for the past year. In this second book in the series, Elly faces many vile enemies and challenges on her quest, and her path eventually converges with Goldies

Book Description
From the opening Sanskrit mantra to the final act of voting in South Africa's first democratic elections, this lyrical memoir provides a unique perspective on South Africa's modern history. The account shows how a young Hindu woman of Indian ancestry, living in South Africa in the 1940s, defied convention, married a Muslim man, and became an activist at time when Muslim women were seldom seen in such a role. As a teacher, she spoke up during the political strife of that highly segregated era, which included the relocation of Indians and angry student boycotts, and here shares her philosophies and insights into education. Filled with characters from both a personal and national context, the memoir captures the nuances of an important time and place.
