Book Description
Excerpt from On Yachts and Yacht Handling But this method of handling a subject is apt to breed dogmatism, especially as the reader is unable to question or deny the statements made until they have been chilled into ink. Sooyou will find in many of my chapters that Iam exceedingly dogmatic. It is unintentional, simply being a manifestation of the spirit peculiar to this style of addressing an audience - one that must hear but cannot answer. Therefore let me warn you to question all my statements, and to accept only those that harmonize with your own conclusions, after you have carefully thought them over. Those that you cannot reconcile to your own knowledge and experience, lay on one side to be tried out at a future day. Book Description
Excerpt from Ready About, or Sailing the Boat As indicated in the sub-title, Sailing the Boat is one of the principal features of the book. This is an art that cannot be mastered by simply learning the theory. Nothing but abundant practice can make a competent boatman. Fifty years ago, the writer, how ever, would have deemed it very fortunate if he could have obtained from a book, even such instruction as he has endeavored to impart. He has by no means ex hansted the subject, though whatever more is to be learned will almost come of itself with experience; The author has learned in fifty years that there is always something more to learn; and the handling of a yacht has come to be almost high art in the amount of time, study, and enthusiasm bestowed upon the subject in recent years. Book Description
Excerpt from Canoeing, Sailing and Motor Boating: Practical Boat Building and Handling It is believed that the book will have wide ap peal, not only to the boy making his first ventures on blue water and to the youth learning to become an able yacht sman, but to the man who would still keep to his love for adventures afloat, yet whose pocketbook may prevent him from becoming a yachtowner in the accepted meaning of the term. To the Poor Man, therefore, let this volume be dedicated. May its perusal steer him clear of ex pensive pitfalls, show him the way to enjoy his days afloat, and keep alive in him that love of the sea which lies at the root of this nation's sea power. Book Description
Excerpt from Yachts and Yachting: With Over One Hundred and Ten Illustrations The history Of the New York Yacht Club, for the first sixteen yea1s Of its ex istence at least, is practically the history Of American yachting. For the first five years it was the only yacht club in the United States. The Southern yacht club, with its head-quarters at New Orleans and its racing course on Lake Ponchartrain, was the second club organized, but it was purely a local organization; its yachts were small open boats, and it had no real national influence, The third club 'was the Neptune, at the'highlands, organized in 1850, one year later than the Southern; but it was rather -a'fishing than a yachting club, and like the Southern, its boats were for the most part open centerboards Of small size. It-may have had an occasional race on the Shrewsbury River, but it was simply a summer. Organi zation, and, except in name, had none of the character istics of a regular yachting organization. The Carolina club, with head-quarters at Wilmington (if I am not mistaken), North Carolina, ranks fourth in point Of age, but was Of no importance ex cept, perhaps, locally. It was organized in 1854.
