Excerpt from On the Mean Density of the Earth Consequently, the whole attraction of the earth, is to the sum of the two contrary attractions of the mountain, as the number 87522720 to 8811 that is, as 9933 to 1 very nearly; on supposition that the density of the matter in the hill, is equal to the mean density of that in the earth. But Dr. Maskelyne found by his observations, that the sum of the deviations of the plumb line, produced by the two contrary attractions, was seconds. Hence then it is inferred, that the attraction of the earth, 'is actually to the sum of the attractions of the hill, nearly as radius to the tangent of seconds, that is, as 1 to 000056239, or as 17781 to 1; or as 17804, to 1 nearly, after allowing for the centrifugal force arising from the rotation of the earth about its axis. Excerpt from The Mean Density of the Earth: An Essay to Which the Adams Prize Was Adjudged in in the University of Cambridge The subject for the Adams Prize for 1893 was "The Methods of determining the absolute and relative value of gravitation and the mean density of the earth." This Essay, to which the Prize was adjudged, gives an account of the various experiments, including one by the author, which have been made to determine the mean density of the earth. The First Part consists of an introductory discussion of the problem and an account of the experiments hitherto made on the subject. Since the Essay was first written I have had access to some of the original papers, of which I had before only seen abstracts or brief notices, and I have therefore been able to make the history of the subject more complete. The Second Part contains an account of my own experiment which has already appeared in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for 1891. As it is a condition of the award of the Prize that the Essay should be printed, it is necessary to give here the account of the experiment in full as already published. I have prefixed a bibliography of works and papers containing important or noteworthy contributions to the subject. In this will be found a reference to an experiment by M. Berget, of which the account has been published so recently that it could not be included in the First Part of the Essay. The book attempts to draw together the various strands of evidence that have led to present knowledge of the distribution of density throughout the interior of the Earth. Details are also given of other properties with which the density is closely linked, including pressure, compressibility and compression, rigidity, seismic velocities, Poisson's ratio and gravitational intensity. Questions of thermodynamics and chemical composition and phase enter discussions where they bear more or less sharply on the density determination; but the book does not purport to be a comprehensive text on the Earth's internal tem perature distribution and composition. The density distributions of other planets are discussed. The quest for clues on the Earth's internal densities has long been an exciting one, and an aim of the book is to present a developing story which has fascinated the author over much of his worl(ing life. The early chapters refer to key developments from ancient times to around 1930. The later chapters recount, in greater detail, develop ments since 1930. The stage has now been reached where numerous published papers bearing on the Earth's density seem to do little more than fidget around the resolving power of long accumulated observational data. So the present seems an appropriate time to try to put some perspec tive into the story. Of course, the story will never be quite finished: in describing the interior of the Earth, there will always be extra decimal places to add as further significant evidence arises.
