An experimental investigation was performed to determine the effects of vibrations on nucleate boiling heat transfer rates. Transverse harmonic vibrations up to 2000 cps were applied to a one-half inch wide Nichrome 5 heater mounted on a 1.25 x 9.0 inch phenolic cylinder. Large improvements in h were obtained at low q/A. However, as the heat flux was increased to approximately 150,000 B/hr sq ft, the improvement diminished to zero, or, in some instances, even a slight degradation. The maximum attainable h for heat fluxes below 150,000 B/hr sq ft occurred at 40 cps. It was nearly equal to the maximum attainable h due to forced convection as reported by McAdams. (Author).
