The region around the sharp corner in laminar viscous flow is studied for high Reynolds number. In order to avoid handling the full Navier-Stokes equations, the flow variables are expressed in the form of the asymptotic expansions, the first terms of which are solutions to separate local governing equations for each region. To reduce the computational details the Blasius boundary layer approaching the corner is approximated by a simple shear flow. The rotational inviscid flow region surrounding the corner becomes a well-posed boundary value problem for an elliptic partial differential equation. The thin viscous sub-layer, lying inside the rotational inviscid region, can be solved by Thwaites approximate method to calculate such parameters as skin friction and momentum thickness. In the immediate vicinity of the corner point Weinbaum's theory is used to investigate the nature of the flow. (Author).

The laminar, incompressible flow along a corner formed by the intersection of two thin airfoils is considered. The effects of small axial pressure gradients on the flow in the vicinity of the corner are determined as a perturbation to the flow along a corner formed by intersecting flat plates. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to determine the cross-flow induced second-order boundary-layer flow away from the corner, and these results serve as the asymptotic boundary conditions for the corner-layer analysis. The effects of both favorable and adverse pressure gradients on the cross flow are discussed. The corner-layer equations are solved numerically with a relaxation procedure. The results for the corners formed by intersecting thin wedges and intersecting Joukowski airfoils indicate that there are substantial interference effects even for very thin airfoil shapes, i.e., small axial pressure gradients. The asymptotic behavior of the equations governing the viscous flow along a right-angle corner is considered. It is demonstrated that consistent asymptotic series exist for the inner corner layer region. These expansions satisfy the corner layer equations and associated boundary conditions. They exhibit algebraic decay of all the flow properties into the boundary layer away from the corner, and prescribe algebraic decay of the cross flow velocities into the outer potential flow. Of course, the streamwise velocity and vorticity are constrained to decay exponentially into the potential flow. The form of this algebraic behavior is required in order to facilitate numerical solution of the corner layer equations. Of particular significance is the use of symmetry as a means of providing a boundary condition, predicting the appearance of logarithmic terms, and specifying the occurrence of arbitrary constants. These constants can only be determined from the complete corner layer solution. (Author).
