Excerpt from Official Catalogue of the British Section: Great Britain Royal Commission, Chicago Exhibition, 1893 IN March, 1891, Mr. Robert Lincoln, the American Minister to Great Britain, made on behalf of his Government a formal application to the Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, asking that this country should take part in the proposed Exhibition at Chicago, and received the reply that a' Royal Commission would be appointed for the purpose. In the following June Sir James Fergusson, the under-secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, applied to Sir Richard Webster, who then held the office of attorney-general, and was the Chairman of the Council of the Society, to know Whether the Society of Arts would undertake the organisation of the British Section of the Chicago Exhibition if a grant of f 2 were appropriated by the Treasury for the purpose.
