Book Description
A survey of the plasma wave data from the Hawkeye-1 spacecraft has been performed in search of ion cyclotron waves associated with the scattering and loss of ring current ions within and near the plasma-pause. During an 18 month period, consisting of about 270 orbits, a total of 5 events have been found with clearly detectable electric and magnetic fields at frequencies below the proton gyrofrequency. Comparisons of the electric and magnetic field amplitudes for these events provide strong evidence that these waves are ion cyclotron waves. All five events occurred during the recovery phase of a magnetic storm at radial distances within or very close to the plasmapause boundary. The results of this survey confirm and are consistent with the earlier identification of ion cyclotron waves by the Explorer 45 satellite. The Hawkeye-1 observations show that ion cyclotron waves of substantial amplitude occur at magnetic latitudes well away from the magnetic equator.

Book Description
Observations of coherent electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) waves associated with a strong, magnetized double layer are presented. The double layers are produced by applying a positive potential to an electrode located in a diverging, solenoidal magnetic field region of a weakly ionized argon plasma. Ionization within the electrode sheath is essential to the formation of these double layers. The resulting V-shaped potential structures have extended parallel, oblique and perpendicular electric field components. The frequency of the ion-cyclotron instability is dependent upon the position of the magnetic field-aligned potential structure. The propagation properties of the EIC waves are presented, and a discussion is given of the possible excitation mechanisms.

Book Description
The fast magnetosonic wave (FW), mode converted ion cyclotron wave (MC ICW) and ion Bernstein wave (MC IBW) have all been observed and unambiguously identified in the mode conversion region of Alcator C-Mod. The influences of the species mix, mode conversion location and Bpol=Btot have been studied in D(3He) plasmas at B0 ~ 5:4 T (fRF = 50 MHz) and B0 ~ 8 T (fRF = 78 MHz). The RF waves were measured by a phase contrast imaging (PCI) system. The experimental observation is compared with the result from a synthetic PCI diagnostic based upon the full wave code TORIC. Good agreement between the observation and modeling has been obtained on the spatial structure of the RF waves. When the mode conversion layer was off axis, both MC ICW and MC IBW were observed. In 5.4 T near axis mode conversion discharges, double hump spatial structure of the MC waves was observed experimentally and reproduced by the synthetic PCI. Such structure is an indication of the up-down asymmetry of the MC ICW. In 8 T near axis mode conversion discharges, we had the first definitive observation of IBW dominated MC in Alcator C-Mod.
