The purpose of this study was first, to determine if Division III female track and field athletes met the nutrient recommendations and second, to identify barriers the athletes faced trying to receive adequate nutrient intake. Twenty-six females were tested once during their competitive season for an interview and basic background information. The testing session included discussion of a twenty-four hour eating behavior journal (EBJ), eating habits, physical activity record, and background questionnaire. An ANOVA was used to determine any differences that occurred in nutrients between events. Frequencies of participants meeting the nutritional requirements were used to determine if athletes fell above or below recommendations. Frequency tests were also conducted on the questionnaire to determine barriers to healthy eating. The dietary intake of Division III female track and field athletes was found insufficient for an active athletic population. Frequencies revealed that being rushed during meal time was the main encountered barrier.

"Much research has reported that female collegiate athletes eat poorly. The purpose of this study was to (1) investigate if there was a difference in macronutrient intake between collegiate female soccer players based on the intervention of registered dietician facilitated nutritional sessions and (2) investigate the athlete's nutritional intake in comparison to AMDR and relative macronutrient recommendations. Female players were recruited from two collegiate soccer teams and placed in either the experimental group or the control group. The intervention was given to the experimental group and was administered by a registered dietician. The participants recorded their nutrient intake on a mobile application, MyFitnessPal[trademark] every day of the week for six weeks. Repeated measures analysis of variance was ran to determine the any difference between the two groups over time for the macronutrients investigated. There was no significant difference was found between the groups and carbohydrates (F(2,38) = 3.049, p=.06), protein (F(2,39) = .921, p=.408), and fat (F(2,44) = 1.209, p=.313). Further investigation into the data showed in reference to the AMDR the participants fell within their recommended ranges; carbohydrates 45-65%, protein10-35% and fat 20-35%. However, their caloric intake overall fell below 2,100 calories on average. The participant's data was investigated in reference to their relative nutrient recommendations and results showed none of the participants met their recommendations for carbohydrates (7-10g/kg) and 27% met their recommendations for protein (1.2-1.4g/kg). Therefore, although there was no significant support that the registered dietician had an effect on the nutrient intake of the participants, results do show support for the current literature that articulates the insufficient nutritional intake of female collegiate athletes"--Leaf iv.

Background: Macronutrients play a critical role within collegiate athletes’ performance and health, with carbohydrates providing most of the energy needs for most athletes. There is little research examining the macronutrient intake of healthy collegiate female athletes across sports. The aim of the present study was to compare macronutrient intakes of female collegiate athletes within different sports and compare their intakes to recommendations. Methods: An observational study was conducted to determine whether a sample of female collegiate athletes (n=26) consumed the IOC nutritional recommendations. Sports included within the study were soccer, basketball, volleyball, and cross-country. Athletes were asked to complete a 6-day food log over a 2-week span, which included 2 weekend days during their in-season training phase. The body composition of athletes was also recorded. Macronutrient and overall caloric intakes were then compared to the IOC recommendations. Results: Overall caloric and carbohydrate intake were significantly lower than the IOC recommendations. Carbohydrate intake was notably low within soccer players (2.92 ± 1.01 g/kg/day) and basketball players (1.61 ± 0.41 g/kg/day). Fat intakes were recorded significantly higher than the IOC recommendations of 15-20%. Athletes demonstrated a significantly higher protein intake than the IOC recommendations when measured in g (100.56 ± 24.01) and g/kg (1.65 ± 0.54). Conclusion: This study found that female soccer, basketball, and volleyball players do not consume adequate macronutrient intakes compared to the IOC recommendations. The current study is one of the first to demonstrate a cohort of female cross-country runners consuming the daily recommendations of both overall caloric intake and carbohydrate intakes during their in-season phase of training.
