Book Description
A user-friendly introduction to convection in porous media, such as fibrous insulation, geological strata, and catalytic reactors. This is a self-contained presentation, requiring only routine classical mathematics and the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. It will thus be of use not only to researchers and practising engineers as a review and reference, but also to graduates and others just entering the field. Applications discussed include such disparate topics as building insulation, energy storage, nuclear-waste disposal, coal and grain storage, chemical reactor engineering, groundwater flow, and stability of snow to avalanches. In this second edition the authors have added: discussions of compact heat exchangers and of tree networks; new material on external natural convection; descriptions of the effects of magnetic fields, of rotations, and of periodic heating; discussions of inclined gradients and of the solidification of alloys; and an extensive treatment of two-phase flows. An extensive list of references -- emphasising recent experimental work -- provides access to the current research literature.

Book Description
This book provides an overview of the field of flow and heat transfer in porous medium and focuses on presentation of a generalized approach to predict drag and convective heat transfer within porous medium of arbitrary microscopic geometry, including reticulated foams and packed beds. Practical numerical methods to solve natural convection problems in porous media will be presented with illustrative applications for filtrations, thermal storage and solar receivers.

Book Description
Natural convection in an enclosure containing a fluid reservoir and a porous medium saturated with the reservoir fluid, is of considerable practical and fundamental interest. The governing equations for the fluid region and the porous region are different. Matching conditions at the fluid/porous-layer interface may be defined. It is numerically advantageous to consider the governing equations for the fluid region as a special form of that for the porous region, i.e. with a porosity of unity. This introduces one set of governing equations for both the fluid flow and the porous medium, and no explicit matching conditions are needed. In addition to the resolution requirement for thermal boundaries along walls in the fluid region, there is also a large gradient of the flow variables in the fluid-porous interface. The numerical resolution requirement for the momentum equations may be different to that for the energy equation. Care should be taken to accommodate this feature. For example, convective transport of momentum may be less significant than diffusion in the laminar flow of a high Pr fluid. In contrast, for the same flow, the convective transport of heat can be very significant and a higher-order discretisation will be needed if the same grid is used for both momentum and energy equations. This will be demonstrated later. In this paper, a finite-volume method is developed for the Brinkman-extended Darcy (BD) and Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy (BFD) models. The novelty of this method is the application of a generalised higher-order convection discretisation scheme formulation on non-uniform grids. The central-differencing (CD) scheme, the second-order upwind (SOU) scheme, the quadratic upstream interpolation (QUICK) scheme, and a second-order hybrid scheme (SHYBRID) fall within the formulation. This allows a comparison of various schemes for the porous natural convection problems. The experimental data of Beckermann et al is used for comparison with the numerical results.
