Oil spills at sea are a severe environmental concern. They can occur during the various stages of well-drilling, repair operations or transportation. The spreading of oil occurs due to the pollutant's tendency to flow over itself. Knowledge of its physical properties during the phenomenon, such as velocities and spatial positions, allows the timely adoption of environmental protection measures. This book presents, in a simple and objective way, the development and implementation of purely Lagrangian numerical modelling using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method for the study of the spreading of oil in its first stage (gravity-inertial regime) on a calm sea. The computational code's implementation and validation were carried out through the simulation of classical problems in the scientific literature, i.e., heat diffusion in a homogeneous flat plate, a still volume of water inside an immobile reservoir and a dam failure. From the coupling of the software with a collision detection and response algorithm, numerical results in concordance with the curve adjusted by James Fay (a pioneering scientist in the study of oil spills) for the prediction of oil slick diameters at the end of the gravity-inertial regime were achieved.

Two-dimensional computer models for simulating oil slick movement in rivers and lakes were developed and then applied to the connecting channels of the upper Great Lakes. In these models the oil slick is considered to be a collection of discrete oil patches. The transformation of an oil slick due to advection, spreading, evaporation and dissolution are considered. In open-water regions the advection of oil patches in the slick are determined by the water current and wind using the drifting factor formulation. Formulas consider the balance of inertia, gravity, viscous and surface tension forces. The oil slick transformation model developed in this study contains as many processes as can be effectively and analytically modeled. The model has several special features, including the ability to model instantaneous and continuous spills, the ability to realistically describe the irregular shapes of an oil slick and the ability to account for the time-dependent variation of the flow conditions. The computer programs are designed so that it will be easy to refine the model elements and expand the model to include additional slick transformation processes. A computer model for simulating oil spreading and transport has been developed. The model can be used as a useful tool in providing advance information and this may guide decisions for an effective response in control and clean-up once an accidental spill occurs. The spreading motion is simulated according to the physical properties of oil and its characteristics at the air-oil-water interfaces. The transport movement is handled by superimposing the spreading with a drift motion caused by winds and tidal currents. By condisering an oil slick as a summation of many elementary patches and applying the principle of superposition, the model is capable of predicting the oil size, shape, and movement as function of time after a spill originates. Field experiments using either cardboard markers or soybeam oil to simulate a spill were conducted at the Long Beach Harbor. (Modified author abstract).
