Book Description
The Early Professional Interdisciplinary Conference was designed to bring together graduate students, post-docs, and lecturers within the first five years of appointment from any of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Its goals included the facilitation of professional development through interdepartmental idea exchange and collaboration, as well as the application of annual themes to better the understanding of teaching and learning within and between disciplines. This volume brings together approaches from Archaeology, Art History, Assyriology, Cinema, Cultural Anthropology, Egyptology, History, Literary Criticism, Marketing, Medieval Studies, Music, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology to the theme of “meaning and λόγος.” Topics range from Urartian archaeology, Egyptian religious practice and Roman sculpture to Peppa Pig, brain imaging, heavy metal and the murals of Belfast. Thematic introductions ensure a coherence among and between the various chapters. The word λόγος had many meanings in Ancient Greek: word, opinion, expectation, speech, principle, rhetorical argument, reason, and even meaning. Investigating how the meaning of a word links ideas and affects pedagogical issues began with Herakleitos and continues today. Logos is also the root of the suffix “–logy”, which is used to describe many of the fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences. As such, it provides an appropriate link between the many branches of investigation and scholarship included here.

Book Description
This is the first complete English translation of Geminos's Introduction to the Phenomena--one of the most important and interesting astronomical works of its type to have survived from Greek antiquity. Gracefully and charmingly written, Geminos's first-century BC textbook for beginning students of astronomy can now be read straight through with understanding and enjoyment by a wider audience than ever before. James Evans and Lennart Berggren's accurate and readable translation is accompanied by a thorough introduction and commentary that set Geminos's work in its historical, scientific, and philosophical context. This book is generously illustrated with diagrams from medieval manuscripts of Geminos's text, as well as drawings and photographs of ancient astronomical instruments. It will be of great interest to students of the history of science, to classicists, and to professional and amateur astronomers who seek to learn more about the origins of their science. Geminos provides a clear view of Greek astronomy in the period between Hipparchos and Ptolemy, treating such subjects as the zodiac, the constellations, the theory of the celestial sphere, lunar cycles, and eclipses. Most significantly, Geminos gives us the earliest detailed discussion of Babylonian astronomy by a Greek writer, thus offering valuable insight into the cross-cultural transmission of astronomical knowledge in antiquity.

Book Description
Michael Servetus participated in the Protestant Reformation and translated the Hebrew Bible into Latin. In July 1531, he published his De Trinitatis Erroribus (On the Errors of the Trinity) in which he explained clearly that the Trinity was a 3-headed monster. Accordingly, Catholics and Protestants alike condemned him. He was then arrested in Geneva and burnt at the stake as a heretic by order of the city's Protestant governing council. This book was translated into English only in 1932, but still worse, the main arguments from part V were completely distorted. For example he explained that God's name was Iehouah because in Hebrew this name was close to the name of Iesuah (Jesus), or Iehosuah, which means "Iehouah is salvation". He also knew that according to Paulus de Heredia, a Christian Cabbalist, the meaning of God's name was "He causes to be" (yehauueh), but he never confused the pronunciation of God's name with its Kabbalistic meaning (yehaweh). For Servetus, Iehouah was the only true God.
