Book Description
Excerpt from The Treatment of Fractures: With Notes Upon a Few Common Dislocations The tracings of the Rontgen rays, which have been very gen erally used to illustrate the sites and the displacements of frac tures, have been the subject of careful study. Each tracing represents the combined interpretation of the plate made by skilled observers who were in every instance familiar with the clinical aspects of the case. The writings of many who have contributed their experience to the literature of fractures have been consulted. Those to whom I feel indebted for suggestions are mentioned in the section on Bibliography. References to literature are not made in the text. I take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the members of the Surgical Staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital for their courtesy in permitting me to study cases of fracture of the lower extremity in the wards of the hospital, and to Professor Thomas Dwight for the use of valuable anatomical material. I also thank Dr. F. J. Cotton for an untiring interest in the pro duction of most of the drawings, and in the search for fracture literature. The half-tones are made from photographs taken under the direct superintendence of the author. Due credit for illustrations not original is given next the legend. Book Description
Excerpt from On Modern Methods of Treating Fractures The x rays, discovered at the end of the last century, quickly gave ready explanation of the most important factor in the causation of this state of affairs, by demonstrating that gross mal-union accompanied most cases of lasting disablement. This demonstration has convinced all except those who wish to remain blind that the basic idea of the old treatment of frac tures - viz., that of 'setting' the bone - was largely mythical; and if we. Once admit that we cannot 'set' a broken bone, then we must be prepared to deal with it in some other way. Book Description
Excerpt from Fractures and Dislocations: Diagnosis and Treatment A certain mechanical sense is most essential in the treatment of fractures and dislocations, and no text-book can supply this to one naturally deficient in this respect. However, an attempt has been made in the following pages to supply the necessary data for the development of this sense and to place before the reader, as far as possible, some of the author's experiences. The more common fractures have been accorded the greatest amount of attention since they are the conditions with which the average practitioner will have to deal most frequently. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Fractures and Dislocations IN the time which has passed since the publication of the seventh edition an increased interest in the treatment of fractures has been manifested and the accumulated experience has shown the relative merits of various methods recently under discussion and has permitted the substitution for their discussion in the text of briefer statements as to their availability and the indications for their employment. The principal changes and additions made in this portion of the book have consequently been in the matter of treatment, and a number of illustrations have been added. In dislocations the largest addition has been on the subject of the dislocations of the shoulder in infancy birth dislocations and the posterior subluxations. A section on sub luxation of the great horn of the hyoid has been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
