Excerpt from Notes on Political Economy Professors. Mr. M'vickar, of Columbia College, New York, has edited this abridgment, and added to the text some valuable notes. Now it is the apprehension of the efi'ect of that work (which is as far as it goes well cal culated for a popular manual) that has induced the author of the following sheets to publish the results of some investigations on the subject which were originally intended for his private use. They are given to the Press with every respect for the talents of Mr. Ricardo and those of his distinguished supporters. We are in fact well convinced that if the principles of this theory (which are founded on circumstances completely con trasted to those that are peculiar to our own country) should be adopted as texts for lectures in our Colleges and Universities, it will greatly retard the progress of this important science among us. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Political Economy as Applicable to the United States These Notes on Political Economy, as applicable to the United States, were written within the last two years, partly to give expression to thoughts that occurred to the author, and partly to occupy and amuse his leisure moments. Friends advised their publication, and they are now given, for what they are worth, to the public. The author hopes that they may be read with care, and without pre judice, their suggestions improved upon, and that they may lead to some good results. The whole United States will find their attention directed, both in principle and detail, to a subject that em braces all interests; and the Southern States par ticularly, with which the author stands identified, by birth and interest, are requested to read these Notes in reference to their staple productions, wants, and operations. Whatever defects may be found in the work, the author hopes to get credit for good intentions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Political Economy From the Colonial Point of View "The English shipowner it is plain" (from a certain Board of Trade paper) "finds it cheaper to hire foreign labour. In 1853 only 4.4 per cent of the crews were foreigners. The proportion has risen until in 1894 it was 16.95 per cent of the whole, not counting Lascars and Asiatics, who have increased until they are about one-eighth or one-ninth of the entire number... The broad result is that in 1894 about two men did the work of seven on steam vessels in 1854, and that on sailing vessels two did the work of four. The decline has taken place chiefly among able seamen and apprentices." - The Times, 28th August 1895. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Conversations on the Principal Subjects of Political Economy Equipped it with an index raisonne, and not with a verbal index. The matters treated in it would afford a very much longer list of items, but I would have the reader to be a student of the matters presented and discussed. A distinguished jurist of Pennsylvania, when he was a student, it is said, tore the indexes out of his copy of the Supreme Court Reports, and it is believed that he was all the better acquainted with the contents of the books. He in tended to be a lawyer, not a case lawyer. He took notice, not notes, charging his judgment and memory, instead of a note-book, with the matter of his studies. Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Political Economy Many and excellent as are the books which have been written on the subject, it is clear enough that there is room for more. One has but to think of the ignorance of the truths of the Science which is displayed in most conversations on Capital and Labour, and to take note 01 some of the proceedings of both parties in the struggle which is at present going on between these two, to see that - however well the truths of Political Economy may be known by a few - much has yet to be done before they permeate Society, so as to be the acknow ledged basis for the rules and objects of our industrial combinations. They contain matters which I thought the student should know oi, but which it is not necessary for him to study.
