Book Description
Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the Pharmac0paeia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Specially Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Medical, Pharmaceutical, Dental, and Veterinary Students This work, originally published eight years ago and a second edition four or five years later, is intended to give to practitioners and students of medicine, in as concise and clear a manner as possible, those points which are of value, without the lengthy detail usually found in text-books. Many new and some old drugs and pharmaceutical preparations have been in tentionally omitted from this edition, and only those are con sidered which are in everyday use and of recognized therapeutic value. It is not an easy task to adopt a system of classification suiting the ideas of all so the author chose to arrange the drugs in alphabetical order, concluding that this arrangement would be more easily comprehended and applied by those for whom the work is intended than would any other more com plicated form. The first part is not intended as a study of botany, etc., but merely a synopsis to familiarize the student with those terms which are frequently used in Parts II and III. In Part II, in considering the individual drugs, only those essential points which are of value are noted, it being the author's desire to eliminate all matter of a superfluous nature. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology Thanks to careful and competent training among pharmacists, the skilful preparation and dispensing Of drugs relieve the physi cian of much responsibility; yet he Should be keenly sensible Of the fact that the larger share Of public confidence is reposed in him, and by diligent study of the subject endeavor to command the minutiae Of pharmacology, holding himself morally accountable for errors quite possible in the druggist's dispensary. It may not be irrelevant to add that in all medical procedure a sympathetic yet perfectly controlled nature, ready tact, and sterling common sense are cardinal requisites to professional triumph, it being gene rally true, as was long since Observed by Hufeland, that success ful treatment requires only one-third science and two-thirds savoir faire. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Two Volumes in One IN composing the following work, the object which I princi pally had in View was to render more useful the lectures I deliver, on the subjects of which it treats. I could not doubt of the advantages to be derived from an outline which pre sents to the student the general arrangement of the course, and a summary of the leading facts and principles which it is designed to illustrate. And I deemed this the more necessary, as the classification of the Materia Medica, which I have adopted, and some of the views of the operations of medicines, are different from those which have hitherto been proposed. Book Description
Excerpt from Recent Materia Medica: Notes on Their Origin and Therapeutics All branches of Medical Science have taken great strides of late years. In Surgery, Spencer Wells and Lister, in Biological Medicine, Pasteur and Koch, have made clear steps in advance; and Therapeutics have become more rational, based on more accurate knowledge and a more extended field. And here an advanced state of information about new Materia Medica must be a decided help to the medical practitioner. Although there are many well-known remedies, superior in general practice to those mentioned in the following pages, yet every medical man has occasionally cases in which he would be glad to "ring the changes," and humour the system of his patient by trying a new medicine. The information in these Notes is compiled from many sources, extending over several years. Besides the Medical and Pharmaceutical Periodicals, the author owes thanks to the new Pharmacopoeias of Germany, the United States, and France; to the Year Books of Pharmacy, the Therapeutical works of Bartholow, Wood, Napheys, Farquharson and Ringer; Husemann and Hilger's "Pflanzenstoffe," Hanbury's "Pharmacographia," Bentley and Trimen's Medicinal Plants," Martindale's "Extra Pharmacop ia," Squibb's "Ephemeris," the "Therapist," Christy's "New Plants," Baillon's "Botanique Medicale," Quam's "Dictionary of Medicine," Papers by E. M, Holmes, Merck, Helbing, &c., &c. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
