Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the Pharmac0paeia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Many new and some old drugs and pharmaceutical preparations have been in tentionally omitted from this edition, and only those are con sidered which are in everyday use and of recognized therapeutic value. It is not an easy task to adopt a system of classification suiting the ideas of all so the author chose to arrange the drugs in alphabetical order, concluding that this arrangement would be more easily comprehended and applied by those for whom the work is intended than would any other more com plicated form. The first part is not intended as a study of botany, etc., but merely a synopsis to familiarize the student with those terms which are frequently used in Parts II and III.
