Book Description
Excerpt from A Discourse Introductory to the Course of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, in Jefferson Medical College: Session MDCCCXXXII-III It is a remarkable fact, that though there is no class of men who have been so much devoted to science in modern times as the members of our profession, yet in none of the physical sciences has the inductive philosophy been admitted with more reluctance than in medicine. Apollo was formerly the God of physicians as well as poets - and it will be admitted that none of his worshippers offered more abundant gifts Upon his altars, or performed their prostrations with more zeal and devotion - But the spirit Of the inductive philosophy has at length arisen, and, with an unsparing hand and homely good sense, brought about a medical reformation. The consequence has been, that the altars of the false God have been thrown down, and his image trampled in the dust, and the temple of nature and the spirit of truth substituted in their place. From this' altar, every offering of the imagination is rejected: its motto is, Observation and experiment. The maxims of the inductive philosophy have been-more and more strictly adhered to in anatomy, physiology, and several departments of surgery. The brilliant discoveries of the circulation of the blood; of the structure and functions of the lymphatics; the magnificent investigations of Mr. C. Bell on the anatomy and Offices of the nervous system; and the astonishing results of modern operative surgery, are among the glorious fruits of this mode Of philosophizing. In medicine, from various causes, the progress has been slower. The greatest obscurity necessarily pervades all living processes. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Delivered in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of the State of New York All these were so familiar to him, that they were seldom written. The manuscripts would perhaps contain a memorandum here and there that would remind one who had often heard him, of the many striking and learned illustrations he was in the habit of ad ducing - but could not enable the editor entirely to recover them, or to give them with any thing like tolerable accuracy. And then, the manner could not be represented. The Vivid flashes of his keen eye; his fine, manly, commanding voice; his animation of delivery, rising, as it often did, to enthusiasm; and his graceful, powerful gesticulation - all these are gone. N 0 reader can imagine them. He must have heard, and have seen the man, to understand what he was in his lecture room. Certainly, if he had adopted St. Augustine's rule for preaching, as a rule for his prelections, he could not have come nearer the venerable father's standard of perfection. There was in his style or his manner nothing that appeared like the obtuse, deformiter, frigide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and General Therapeutics: In the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, Delivered October 13th, 1857 Of the varied shadows that give a sombre hue to thelife Of a physician, allow me to name, as entitled to a prominent place, the deficalties encountered by many pu pits in the course of study. These may arise, partly from defects in early education, and in part from want Of pecuniary means. Embarrassments, such as these, are always augmented by a consciousness of ignorance, or a sense of humiliating dependence on others, or by both. When, as sometimes happens, a young man Of very feeble intellect, and of slender literary acquirements, enters on medical studies, he feels not how deficient he is, and, of course, realizes not the difficulties that are soon to gather around him. Such persons are apt to entertain highly favourable notions of their own powers, and at all events have convinced themselves, by what process I know not, that any sort of material may be worked up into a Doctor, and that, therefore, they need not despair. Others there are, whose native powers are of gigantic proportions, who, though far from having been well educated, have become enamoured of medicine, and are devoted to its study. And, however industrious they may be, they meet with hinderances at almost every turn, and their ardour is often suspended. Such per sons are sometimes compelled to protract their studies beyond the limit prescribed by their first calculations, by reason of poverty. The man whose means are very limited, although possessed of a high order of mind, is often forced to be in the rear Of the drone in science, whose purse, it may be, is far better supplied than his head. This may be a source of keen mortification, for which there can be no remedy but patience and perse verance.
