Book Description
When the Adjutant General's Office published Raphael Thian's "notes" on U.S. military geography in 1880, it produced an invaluable research tool for generations of military historians to come. In this single documented reference volume, Chief Clerk Thian traced the confusing mutations through which the divisions, departments, and districts of the Army's command had evolved since 1813. The volume is divided into three parts, beginning with the names of the United States Army Continental Commands, the date and authority for their creation, location of the headquarters, geographical changes and discontinuances, and other details including the geographical boundaries embracing each division, department, and district. Part II is filled with background information on states and territories, and Part III lists the maps contained in The Military Atlas of the United States. The Addenda to this edition expand and update Thian's work. Notes made by Francis B. Heitman to keep his personal copy current are included, as is the Memorandum published by the government in 1906. This addition lists all changes from 1898 through 1905.

Book Description
This unprecedented compilation provides the fullest examination anywhere available of the crucial social-political and strategic and policy-level issues of American military history between the Revolution and the Civil War: civil-military relations and the military‘s place in American society and politics; westward expansion and the diverse peacetime missions assigned the military, especially constabulary missions and operations; force structure, mobilization and the formation of military strategy in support of national objectives; and military preparedness, administration, reform and professionalization. The introduction links all of these issues, pointing to the increasing scale, scope and organization and the growing dominance of national forces in American military institutions and operations during this important period.

Book Description
"Paul Hutton’s study of Phil Sheridan in the West is authoritative, readable, and an important contribution to the literature of westward expansion. Although headquartered in Chicago, Sheridan played a crucial role in the opening of the West. His command stretched from the Missouri to the Rockies and from Mexico to Canada, and all the Indian Wars of the Great Plains fell under his direction. Hutton ably narrates and interprets Sheridan’s western career from the perspective of the top command rather than the battlefield leader. His book is good history and good reading."–Robert M. Utley
