Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina, Vol. 5 The law inaugurating the Geological Survey provides for the investigation of the timber as well as the mineral interests of the State and in carrying out this provision a systematic examination of the forests was begun in 1891 and has been carried on since that time. The plan adopted in this work embodies a fourfold investigation: first, as to the existing forest resources; second, as to how these resources can be utilized to the greatest advantage with out involving the destruction of the forests; third, as to how the waste lands of the State can be continuously restocked with valua ble trees, and thus our forest wealth perpetuated; and fourth, as to what can be done to encourage the development in the State of enterprises which will manufacture into finished products a larger portion of our timber instead of shipping to other States our crude. Materials for manufacture there. We have found, as will be shown in this Report and others which are to follow at an early date, that our forest resources are. Considerable: and they are now attracting lumbermen and capital from many sections of the country. The lumbering industry in the State is already a large one and is increasing in magnitude; indeed, already the timber is being cut with such rapidity that we mav fairly ask ourselves the question, how long it will be before our forest wealth, like that of many other States, becomes a matter of the past. Excerpt from Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Agriculture has not yet greatly lessened the timber areas of Florida. About one acre in eight has been cleared. In many parts, in the southern half of the State particularly, the forest cover is so thin that the woods afford about a good pasturage as if the trees were not there. In the northern part, where the hardwoods of the Appalachian region overlap on Florida and soil is better, the forests' are generally much heavier. Many of the Florida rivers are ideal as driving streams for logs. The currents are sluggish, and the water usually deep. There are a few bars and no rapids. On small streams the chief obstacle in the way of log driving is frequently trees which grow along the banks and down to the extreme low water mark. These trunks sometimes so nearly close the channels that little space is left for logs to pass through. That difficulty is not often met on the larger rivers. Set in what remains some of the wildest country in the United States, Sound Wormy recalls a time when regulations were few and resources were abundant for the southern lumber industry. In 1901 Andrew Gennett put all of his money into a tract of timber along the Chattooga River watershed, which traverses parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. By the time he wrote his memoir almost forty years later, Gennett had outwitted and outworked countless competitors in the southern mountains to make his mark as one of the region's most seasoned, innovative, and successful lumbermen. His recollections of a rough-and-ready outdoors life are filled with details of logging, from the first "cruise" of a timber stand to the moment when the last board lies "on sticks" in the mill yard. He tells how massive poplars, oaks, and other hardwoods had to be felled and trimmed by hand, dragged down mountain slopes by draft animals, floated downstream or carried by rail to the mill, and then sawn, graded, and stacked for drying. He tells of buying timber rights in a land market filled with "sharp" operators, where titles and surveys were often contested and kinship and custom were on an equal footing with the law. Gennett saw more than potential "boardfeet" when he looked at a tree. He recalls, for instance, his efforts to convince the U.S. Forest Service to purchase undisturbed areas of wilderness at a time when its mandate was to condemn and buy up farmed-out and clear-cut land. One such sale initiated by Gennett would become the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness in North Carolina. Filled with logging lore and portraits of the southern mountains and their people, Sound Wormy adds an absorbing new chapter to the region's natural and environmental history.
